2006 tacoma v6. The A/C stopped blowing cold air and made a higher pitch droaning type sound from inside the cab, and now the ac light is flashing. I can confirm the sound is not my serpentine belt. The sound is no longer there, was just happening a first when it stopped blowing cold air. Now its just the flashing light.

    Any insight is appreciated.

If the light is flashing it means the AC wants to engage the clutch to turn the compressor. Something is not allowing the compressor so turn so the AC protects the system by disengaging the clutch. The light tells you the compressor can't turn.

Would you suspect bad compressor bearing or bad clutch? Or something else as a more common issue?

Could be the high pressure side is too high and the high head pressure is preventing the compressor from turning.

Open the hood and watch to see if the clutch is trying to engage. You will need a second person to turn the AC switch on and off . Keep your hands away from moving parts obviously.
