Doing a custom long travel, instead of a more bolt on style on like Camburg, TC, etc. Could've long traveled three different trucks by now...

Their Titanium line isnt much far off of a Hobart price wise. It would be worth it to spend maybe another $100 to get something with miller style consumables and customer service.

 

Exactly, big difference in perception and need for the home hobbiest user or a professional fabricator.

It’s kinda like putting triple bypass 3.0’s on a pavement pounder, daily driver. Yeah, they are awesome and ride spectacularly...but they are wildly overkill for the application

 

I remember for my senior project someone bought $100 flux machine haha. Was interesting say the least.
I guess you're right about entry level, it depends. The coolest welder I've used was a miller maxstar 140. Definitely not cheap, but was awesome.
Had the strap around my neck and rode it over on my skateboard. Tiny little thing. Welded a full SAE formula frame with it.

 

Not sure I agree. $8-900 is not a lot of money...( for a tool that will perform well for a long time).
But that's also relative. $900 for a much better welder that you can use the rest of our life, is not overkill.
If we were talking a miller dynasty 210 or something then yes.

 

Speaking of welders and entry levels....I struck my first arc at 10 years old with a Lincoln 225 AC stick welder, I remember it like it was yesterday. Dad still has it, I’ll be 44 on Sunday. I loved welding growing up. Did lots of welding burning dads welding rods for friends.

Bought a portable welder from a friend for $300 at about 20 years old and made money with it. It only had 110 plugs on it. I wanted 220 to run a plasma cutter in the field. I bought a miller bobcat and sold the $300 welder for $750 after several years of use.

I went to work at 20 years old in the machine shop I work in now. First time ever seeing or using a mig welder. It’s a millermatic 250. I had to have one, went to the local miller dealer and he told me I didn’t need one that big. Talked me into a millermatic 185. I regretted it from the first use because I’d already been spoiled with the 250 at work.

I did a lot of side work at the time and sold the 185 and bought a 210 I still have. I don’t use it much at all anymore since getting married and having two kids. The bobcat only gets ran when the power goes out to power the house.

I bought a hypertherm plasma cutter at an auction with a 50’ 220v drop cord cheap. Have had it 15 years or more. Also have an Ellis 1600 metal saw, all these tools I worked very hard to acquire and even though I don’t use them much I know I would regret selling any of them.

I take our son to work every now and then, I let him strike his first arc at 5 years old and have the piece of metal in my toolbox he welded.

You have to start somewhere, whatever you can afford at the time.

I run a 3 axis milling machine and do all our welding at work, I’m kind of burnt out on welding is why my stuff don’t get used much.

I think you bring up a good point about being spoiled and used to a certain type of tool. Hard to go back after.

 

I think I hang onto all these tools and equipment so our son can use them. I grew up poor and dad had that Lincoln buzz box and a hacksaw. That was about it. I want my kids to have it better than my brother and I did.

 

If you make minimum wage (or even double minimum wage) and have never had 2 $100 bills to rub together, it doesn't really matter how long it will last if you can never afford one to begin with.

You should always try to buy the nicest tool/widget you can that makes sense for your needs, while just being realistic with your expectations, and your budget. I bet 90% of the people rolling on King resi coilovers out there wouldn't notice if you switched them out for some 5100's and just painted them blue.

What are your experiences with this combo? I just installed my Kings recently but havent driven on em much yet. Really not sure if I'll keep them though...

You have OEM kings and Deaver J59s? Got any pictures? I can't
imagine getting them installed without compressing the J59s
a whole bunch and causing the Kings to be topped-out or close to it while
the truck is just sitting there... when the shop that did the work for
me saw how it wasn't going to do right, they threw the OEM length
Kings on the "used" shelf, took some measurements and
ordered some custom-length Kings that are so far working
great (no boulder fields yet). They ate the cost of the Kings
that wouldn't work.

I'm real curious about how you got the passenger side rear
King to install... the placement of the reservoir bottle was an
issue with both sets on my truck.

depends on your definition of "need". If you have an instagram account, then you're goddamn right you NEED them...

 

I'll follow up with pics when I get off of work. It took some fidgeting to get em in, but they're in and I'm able to drive on them. But like I said I really just drove up and down the street a couple times just to shake them down. Didn't get a chance to take them out on a trail yet and I don't think I will now. Probably just gonna slap the 5100s back on until I get a rear cage and bypasses.
