Haven't given an update, had surgery on the 29th and that went well. June 1st I was in the emergency room having an ultrasound on my leg which confirmed I had a blood clot (Deep Vein Thrombosis) so now I am on blood thinners for 90 days. I have decided to cancel race #2 in Santa Rosa which is a real bummer as my wife was racing too but she has decided to drop it as well to save travel costs. Follow up appt for the surgery is tomorrow and I am hoping to get the stitches out so I can start swimming again.

A pic of how it looked after I got to take off the bandages 3 days after surgery...

Got to compete today! Ended up second in my age group and got this cool mug. Been almost a year since my last race and it felt great to get out there again. I learned two things. First is that I hate hills. It's balls flat everywhere that I train and I'm really not used to any elevation change. Second is that I REALLY need to work on my transitions. T1 was 1:37 and T2 was 1:02. My last race they were less than half that and I think it's due to a lack of practice leading up to this one. Still super happy with how I performed. Now I'm looking forward to a day off and then getting back to it!

So far things are going pretty well in my recovery. I swam for the first time Monday and again yesterday 3 weeks post surgery. I also managed 3 miles on a piece of equipment like an elliptical trainer but it simulates running more than anything and 5 miles on a recumbent bike. Going to do another week of that and then test how it feels on my tri bike on the trainer. Running will wait for a bit after that but I have high hopes that I will be ok for Calgary 70.3 August 12th.

    How's everyone else doing?

Slower than I would like but that could be my fault for pushing too hard with some running and hiking. I am now just pedaling a bunch and swimming as much as I can, did a 5k swim about 2 weeks ago and making sure to do no less then a mile every time. Did my longest bike ride Sunday, 30 miles, and it felt great. Riding home from work today and going to go for a 3 hour ride Saturday which will be a real test. I have decided to not run until the day before race day to do a very short/easy shake out run and of course on race day.

Bummer about the IT band, I struggle with that some myself. Is that keeping you from the now duathlon or is it just bad timing?

    Smart choice!

I got out for my longest, and only 3rd training ride for IM Calgary 70.3 which is in 2 weeks! Broke it up into 2 rides because I wanted 51 miles on my 51st birthday, total ride was 58.8 miles avg 19.3 mph. Super happy with that with the serious lack of training. Best part of the ride right here, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ris_jigG6dM

Thanks! It was a little nuts but I didn’t even think about it.

Race day tomorrow! IM 70.3 Calgary, should be a great day. 10.5 weeks since my knee surgery, training numbers are low but I feel really good.

Good to hear your knee is feeling good!

My race was crap, I didn’t finish. I had a very bad swim experience in ‘12 where I almost drowned in a mass start swim where I got pushed under everyone and had to fight my way off the bottom of the lake through people to get air. Sunday’s swim was similar although they called it a rolling start, got caught in a pack of people and had a major panic attack. I got to a boat and couldn’t calm down with a hr of 189. I pulled myself from the race.

I am done with triathlon for the foreseeable future. It freaked me the hell out. I may give duathlon a try but for now I am just going to ride my gravel bike a lot and enjoy life.
