Taking the family for some overland style adventure for a couple weeks soon. I I have my state CCW, and have been too lazy to apply for my LEOSA permit... so that means I’m SOL for carry in CO. I also plan on doing a bit of plinking with a long gun.

What are your laws for a non-ccw when it comes to handguns and long guns?

Open carry? Loaded in car or locked in case? Illegal to carry a picture of a gun on ones person.

    Thanks to all!

Not trying to be an ass but honestly google would work best. You could also call a sheriffs department there, they are your best source more than likely. Is your state issued CHL not recognized by Colorado?

MN doesn’t have reciprocity with CO.

I guess I am looking for the verification I found while googling, without spending too much digging through the state laws. Also, what are the gray areas I should avoid? For instance, loaded mags in car are okay in MN, but if you are stopped you’ll have some tough ‘splanin to do.

what I found was, CCW permit not honored, open carry okay, loaded in car okay(?).

I found this. Seems like their gun laws are pretty funky there. Always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to firearm laws.

This is what I’m going off. Won’t be in Denver metro, so not worried there. Biggest city we’ll be passing through is Colorado Springs. Mostly I carry a handgun in a chest rig to cover a retreat if I need to put myself between a chupacabra and my fleeing family... and a good hosing is bear spray didn’t do the trick. The rifle is support if we are stranded for any length of time. Starting in The San Juan’s and broverlanding the continental divideish to Teton NP, so lots of solo adventuring with the wife and two preschoolers.

Long guns and shotguns cannot be loaded (chambered) while in a vehicle. Magazines and tubes can be loaded and inserted.

Handguns are OK in the car as a vehicle is an extension of your home.

Open carry is OK except for the City of Denver. However you stand a very good chance of Karen complaining to management if you open carry in Bed, Bath and Beyond.

Gun Free Zone signs only have the force of law if the building has permanent security screening, but you can (and will) be asked to leave.

There is a 15 round magazine restriction. Any magazine you owned (which is every single one) before 2013 is Grandfathered and legal.

Please collect your brass when shooting outdoors.

    Perfect, and thank you!

Brass is always collected when I can for reloading. That said, I can’t promise much if the pistol comes out. Though it should all be in close proximity to the trail of poop released while I’m shitting my pants.

Staying away from the Denver/Boulder area is a great choice. The liberals would rather invite all of the illegals over for a vegan BBQ than defend themselves.

You can technically open carry in Colorado Springs. Personally I wouldn’t do it especially on a chest rig. Also remember any store or establishment in Colorado can post signs on the front saying no firearms allowed. If you violate their wishes they can make you leave, have you trespassed, or worse. Also keep in mind Colorado Springs this time of year basically turns into a big tourist town. If you’re doing the tourist thing as well you’ll probably be around a whole bunch of other people that don’t know our laws.

Agree. I Wouldn't open carry in the cities. When I didnt have my CCW I would just keep my gun in the car and open carry out in the back country

Same here. That brings up another good point. OP needs to check on the national parks rules if he intends to visit any.

Colorado's National Parks observe all state and local firearms laws per 16 USC 1a-7b

All National parks follow the laws of the state in which they reside. The open carry on the chest rig is for backpacking and day hikes with the fam. Otherwise the pistol is tucked away in the truck. 99% of the time will be in the public lands, in only driving through Colorado Springs twice... way there, way back.

    Thanks all for posting!

Thanks again! I’ve been in the road for 14hrs with kids.. so sorry if I ramble.

I’m not the guns and coffee type, hell I don’t even have a discrete bumper sticker on the trunk. Low profile, blending in, and leaving my tracks better than I found them is our desire. Too many “in your face” types out there already, certainly don’t need my ego mixing in. I’d happily carry concealed, but CO doesn’t play well with MN. I think it’s you all just getting us back for sending so many of our long o’s and a’s to your eastern slope.... sorry, I’ll go home, I’ll even stay out of the left lane on I-25, I promise!

Rifle and pistol are locked up and safe. Pistol has a 15rd mag, and rifle has 11 if I stuff them in, so I’m legal there. Rifle isn’t chambered, nor assembled. Open carry was for the woods only, sorry if I wasn’t clear. Nothing short of eminent threat of actual death or grievous bodily injury warrants revisiting the two way shooting range, already have enough baggage from my last visit. Plus I don’t want to scare a Karen or two.. can you imagine?!?

I haven’t been pulled over in, shit, 24yrs, but I was on the other side of the glass for a decade. I stopped a guy once in the middle of the night. Walked up and all the windows were open because tint, hands were at 10/2 and dome light on. After I gave my spiel he says, “good evening, sir, I want to let you know I have my permit to carry. I am carrying a pistol on my right hip, it is loaded. My insurance and registration are in the glove box, and my license is in my wallet. My wallet is in my right back pocket. How would you like me to proceed?” I was happy he did that and we worked through the stop with no problems. It stuck with me and I plan to do the same if I’m pulled over.

So yeah, I’m coming to your home, and wanted to make sure I maintain my decorum and respect of your culture and social mores.

I appreciate the assist folks, happy wheeling!

Like magazine restrictions really make a difference in reality... liberal laws at its finest.

I think breckenridge banned open carry too. If you are in the woods you should be ok though.
