Just got off the phone with Lochsa/Powell Ranger District. Lolo Motoway is clear of snow but is currently not open for regular sized highway vehicles. Apparently they've gone through and cleared a narrow path through the numerous downed trees on the motorway big enough for motorcycles and ATV's only. :bikewhoops:

I asked if they had a guess on when it would be open for regular sized highway vehicles, was told to give a call back in a week. :ohsnap:

been following your build. nice work and good luck on your trip. didn't realize it was that far a drive. us islanders have poor geography skills. no such thing as overlanding here. excited for you especially after the delay.

My Brother invited me to come to Hatteras with his family. Decide to go out for a few days before my big trip.

    Saturday 7/20/19

***ORV permit required $50/10days or $250/year

***beach side of the ramp was the only place I saw someone sunk up to the axles

***Don't forget to switch Quality to 1080P for video. YouTube is sneaky.

    ***pre-setup

    ***full beach setup including awning

    ***empty beach late evening

    Sunday 7/21/19

***no awning because of 18+mph winds, notice the water setup with 2 mister lines and rinse station, 18 gallons goes fast but lasted the whole day even to final cleanup

    ***redneck riviera

***grilling greasy burgers in high wind can be challenging, and a fire hazard, won't try that again in high winds

    Monday 7/22/19

***end of day on the last day

    Wednesday 7/24/19

***brought a little of Hatteras National Seashore to the other end of the state, from the beach to the mountains

One of bad things about the beach, other than leaving... is the cleanup after..

But I still love the beach

I've been trying to stay caught up with your build and it's been awesome! Is this your first full outing with the truck since having the majority of stuff on?

Yes. I stayed in my RTT the first night in a camp ground on the sound side. It was 85deg and near 100% humidity @ 2am. Even with 2 fans blowing on me I only got 4 hours of very rough sleep. Couldn't take the chance the next 3 nights would be the same at the ocean front camp ground where I had reservations. Ended up sleeping in the AC at the house my Brother rented for the week.

There were definitely some lessons learned from this short trip.

    Magnets!

    Sunday 7/28/19

Added side, front, and back panels to my soft under rack cover. Hopefully this will minimize dust from contaminating all my gear in the bed.

***used triple plated neodymium magnets sewn into the side panels to secure to truck bed

***had originally planned to run the back panel over my swing away tailgate but this seems to work fine, may attempt later, will require a split down the middle to accommodate the spare tire extension

***front panel extends down between the bed and cab held in place by 3 magnets

***a few open areas but should minimize dust collection in the bed area

***this magruder corridor picture is what motivated me to get this done before my trip

    More Magnets!

    Tuesday 7/30/19

Went ahead with plan to run back panel over swing away tailgate.

***not really into the way it looks but this is for 100% utilitarian purposes, secured around perimeter with 8 magnets, may add a few more later before I leave

Even with my hard shell and sealing it all over after going wheeling I would have quite a lot of dust in the bed. Under the plastic bed caps is where a lot of it came from there are a bunch of unnecessary holes along the top of the bedsides. Guys take the caps off and put some thin 2 sided tape or weather stripping to seal them off and only leave just enough space for the clips of the caps. Also got dust and water in where even the slightest gap was between the cap and bed it's amazing how it can get in at even the smallest of gap. I would fill those holes with something to plug those holes. For as long as you plan on being in the dirt you may end up with quite a lot of dust in the bed.

Got more magnets coming tomorrow. Going to try to make small panels held on with sewn in magnets to close those gaps.

Love the way it's turned out so far definitely taking some inspiration from your build. I'm planning on building out a first gen tundra more for overlanding type stuff and your bed set up is probably the nicest I've seen.
