Have you covered your exposed wires?

There are a lot of small gauge colored wires leading to plugs all over the engine and under our trucks that have been covered with split wire loom, but most of them are too short near the plugs exposing the vulnerable wires to rodents and the elements like these under my truck:


I was thinking of sealing the wires in a blob of black silicone where they are exposed like this- it would protect them where they enter the plug and remain somewhat flexible.

Has anyone dealt with these yet on their truck? What was your solution?

On another note, the sheathing on one of my rear brake sensors was cut or bitten (another exposed wire on this truck!), so I bought some chrome spiral wire wrap to make a harder sheath around them. Hate chrome, so they will be painted black, too. Anyways, better check yours if you do offroad or camping - lots of gnawing animals out there!

Do the porcupines climb under the cars?

 

It may work for mice, but we have woodrats that eat our pepper with seeds and all for breakfast! I use cayenne pepper in the engine bay, it does help too for mice.

The chrome wire will be painted black before I install it, but maybe if I wrap it first and then with the tape that will help even more. Some of the reviews looked like it didn't help though, but no harm in trying. Thanks!

Ive seen wood gates chewed to bits by them also.

 

Those porcupines are pretty badass LOL. Where is this picture located? east coast? I've never seen a porcupine before.

 

That’s the entrance to the Bugaboos in Southeastern BC. Cars are usually parked days at a time and the local porcupines love to chew hoses..

 

Nice! Where I lived once, we had wild burros chewing on the sides of our house.

Since having my harness destroyed by what I think was squirrels, I have some "rodent repellent" material in my engine bay. Both are odor based, I guess the theory is that they are less likely to make a home if the bastards can't smell for predators.

To be honest, I don't think any non-metal cover will do much. I had two Tacoma harnesses digested in a two week period. The squirrel gave two shits about connectors, wires, fuse box covers, whatever. Maybe mice only get the wires, all I know is that the damage to my vehicle (1 owned, one courtesy) was well beyond what any sleeve would protect.

My best explanation is that the squirrel was looking for a home and was clearing space to have it's devil spawn. It's certainly not for dinner. There were nesting materials delivered to the new space, ie-leaves, ground debris.

Mice might be a different story, I'm gonna keep up with the pine bags and rodent pellets. Next option..

 

We have woodrats that do the same, pile kindling sized sticks in the engine compartment or trunk of a car if it’s parked too long. A friend had his catering truck catch on fire due to them piling sticks on the engine, guess they didn’t like his cooking.

What are you using to try to keep the squirrels out?

 

You can buy a tube of Dielectric Grease at any auto parts store or even at Walmart. Unplug the plug connectors and and squeeze some Dielectric Grease into the connections, than reassemble.
