What is this part that goes into the license plate wiring plug called?

One light is plugged in but the other side the wires are just loose and the plug end is gone. I'm new to doing work on my own vehicle and with some google searching I'm not making much progress on what this is called. If you know a part number for it that would be amazing but really anything to get me started would be great. Thank you!

It says its a socket plug but it shows the socket in the picture, which is already on the truck and looks fine. I'll keep looking. Thanks for the info I might message DaveInDenver if I come up empty.

 

Toyota sells the plastic connector and pigtails separately. They're kind of expensive for what they are, but that's the easiest way to fix it. There are alternate cheaper sources for the connector and terminals, but then you have crimp the terminals. Dave was here about an hour ago. It would be best to wait for him to answer.

 

You might try a junk yard for those. If you can find a Toyota of similar year I'd bet you can find an appropriate 2 wire connector and just cut the wires back a couple feet from the connector end. I don't know for sure but I'd be willing to bet the connector used would be common across several Toyota vehicles of similar year range (highlander, 4 runner, maybe even a Lexus or Scion).

The best kind of yard for this would be a "pick-n-pull" or pull your own parts place. They are usually cheap and you can look around yourself for what you need. Since you're inexperienced you can have the opportunity to mess around with Toyota's that you don't have to worry about messing up too.

I'm slightly confused, so bear with me. Do you need the side in the wiring harness on the truck? IOW, the connector has broken off from the wiring harness?

If so, it's part number 90980-11162 for the plastic connector (housing) and 82998-12440 for the repair pigtails. It's a common connector used in a lot of places on our trucks and across Toyota.

But it's significantly cheaper to buy a kit from Corsa Technic that includes the housing, terminals and seals. Their part number is 090II-2S-5.

They sell Yazaki and Sumitomo, which are the OEMs for the electrical connectors Toyota uses. It's the same part just not in a Toyota box.

If you're talking about the plastic part that holds the bulb and turns 90 degrees in the bumper then that has to come from Toyota.



That part number is 90075-60005. A junk yard is a totally acceptable way to find those if you can. They may be brittle and broken by now, though I think they are the same for all 05-15 so it shouldn't be hard to find.

It's about $10 from a dealer, so probably not worth digging in junk yards is my point.

Looking at the one you linked I'm guessing the seals and socket contacts it comes with are whats used to connect these wires? I don't have a caliper is there any chance you know the wire and seal size I would select on that page? I really appreciate the help and time you took for such a simple and cheap part. The Toyota repair pigtails have 160mm long wires with the terminals and seals crimped on, like this:



You'd cut and splice them with your broken ends, crimped with a butt connector, solder them, etc.

The kit I linked would require you to strip and crimp the terminals on and they'd end up looking like repair pigtails when you're done.

Without a caliper it's hard to know but if I was guessing (please know it's only a guess!) I'd suggest get the 18-16 AWG terminals and insulation of 1.5-1.9 mm.

 

@DaveInDenver is there a connector body available that if I unplug one of my plate lights, I could plug into the harness and have 2 wires to work with?

 

The Toyota mating plug that mimics the license plate bulb connector is 90980-11168 and the repair pigtails are 82998-12430.

Note that this is for 2nd gen trucks, I believe 3rd gen uses a different connector. Can't say if it fits 1st gen or earlier trucks.

But if you want a raw plug and loose terminals Corsa Technic kit 090II-2P-5 works fine. In fact I used two of this exact kit to wire the lamps on my All Pro rear bumper I just installed on my truck.

No way, I love junk yards and will personally use any excuse I can find to go and hunt around in one. At my local pick and pull a buck gets you through the door. A connector like that would go in my pocket along with the various relays, fuses, light bulbs, bolts, and other such small free samples items. I'm bound to find some other larger treasures while I'm in there too. I wouldn't go there just for that connector, but then I always find cool stuff and never consider an afternoon at the junk yard as a wasted day!

 

So did the 18-16 1.5 to 1.9 work? I had some problem wire broke to close to fix. The whole harness is $218 from Toyota. Thanks for any help

 

Don't know what dealer is trying to bone you for $218, but the OEM connector and 2 pigtails Dave posted above only add up to $18.75

I think he meant for the whole harness. Glad I found this though will save me a lot of money if doesn’t work will install small light bar above license plate and just leave old covers off so don’t get pulled over thinking they are not working
