Hey, guys. I'm another victim of the 800 lb gorillas working at my local dealership. I let ToyotaCare perform the first oil change six months ago and recently did the second one on my own. Had to use the impact wrench to get the damn housing off. Thought everything went fine until I dropped my skid plate last night. Oil everywhere due to hairline crack.

    20190701_182608.jpg

Why do they tighten these so much?? This much torque is impossible through thermocycling, that's just bad service.
So I filed a complaint with Toyota headquarters to help them get the message across and ordered my aluminum housing.

this is why i am a firm believer in:

    1) let them do ALL the maintenance and you don't touch it so that they can only blame themsevles and will have to fix it.
    2) let them do none of your maintenance and you do all of it. So it's done right.

Dealer just called me back and said

That's fair. That covers the $35 I paid for the new housing and enough oil to top it off in the next few days.
I'm happy again. (And impressed by how quickly they closed the ticket.)

Cancel your order and buy the Baxter Performance adapter for $200. You will never deal with that issue again. Well worth the money.

See, that part's debatable especially since I've already got about half a dozen cartridge filters on the shelf for future changes. Wish I had known about this adapter a year ago! Post a picture of your Baxter adapter + spin on when you get a chance!

You guys are making changing oil way to hard. Just do what the dealer does.
Take out only the filter drain plug, start engine. That will flush the filter and remove all the oil at same time. No new filter needed. Timing is critical though, oil will gush out at first, so just before it slows to a drip, shut off engine and refill. A clattering noise is also a good indication all the oil has been removed and you may proceed to refill step.

Nanny state disclaimer, that's a joke, don't do that.

Swapped my housing for the aluminium one today. Dropping the filter cap you only lose about 0.3 quarts of oil so there's no need to do the full 6 quart change. What a huge improvement!! The aluminium housing threads feel smooth and don't bind up like the plastic one.

Thanks for the input, everyone. Happy trucking.

On all my other Toyota’s I use a 5 foot steel pipe as a breaker bar, does the trick.

Like to see the other side of this special socket, IF it's not too much trouble. Oddly there is an add for the style I bought that fits a 2016 V6, below this thread. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073XF45NF

No problem. But it will have to be later, as I'm at work for now.

I can't speak for other products. But I can tell you that the TOY640 fits ALL Toyota, Scion and Lexus vehicles that use the cartridge setup. All the filter housings are the same size and dimensions on the end...regardless of whether they're plastic or aluminum.

I saw a similar post on fb and will definitely be doing this on my truck and wife's 16 T4R. $20 well spent.

I'm following the hybrid plan. Let them do the "free" services (that are really baked into the price of the vehicle), and they can fixed if they break it, then do it myself after the ToyotaCare I paid for runs out.
Metal housing and fumoto valve are going on as soon as it's my turn to do service.

I don't get under the car (only for oil filter swap), have not gotten under to do so in fifteen years and I sold the car with 313K miles on the clock. I evacuate the oil via mityvac fluid extractor. It has graduated marks for each quart you've sucked out. It's a much cleaner process, I just ordered the baxter conversion for the 2016 Taco.

    Here ya go.

I bought this many years ago. I like it's thick, sturdy construction and the fact that it has a 24 mm provision on the top. No weak 3/8" square hole like some cap wrenches. So if some professional arm wrestler happened to change the oil before me (which happens on some of my friends and neighbors vehicles) I can carefully loosen it with a breaker bar with nice even torque.

Never damaged a housing....including the plastic ones.
