Apparently the computer is bad in my 04 tacoma. I was told "Toyota made 4 computers for that model, and if you match the numbers it will work."
Locating one has proven a little challenging, but before I spend $ having it shipped to me, I just need to know if this is correct info please. I'm a disabled, older lady, who seems to attract misleading information .I have not had a vehicle in over 6 weeks, and public transportation is SO irritating to get to doctors, and grocery store.
    Thank you all in advance.

    Welcome !!

That should be true if the Toyota Part numbers match you should be good to go.

What was wrong that you were told the computer needs replaced??

Other then a Voltage spike or water damage or physical impact damage these things don`t seem to fail

    Hi, thank you for responding.
As I was driving, it just cut off as if it was out of gas, but tank is full. I cranked it back up, drove maybe 20-30 foot, and it cut off again. I decided to crank it while pulled over to see if it would stay running, but each time it wou k d cut off. I had it towed to shop where they tested it they said on "diagnostic machine, and it showed the computer isn't sending message to fuel pump to send the gas,and it would be around $1000 for a new one."
Knowing how shops seems to like to take advantage of women, I had it towed to another shop that a friend recommend. They checked and tested then said " it's the computer. " Not knowing anything about these newer vehicles, I THOUGHT it may be the fuel pump, one of the fuel filters, or maybe the throttle position sensor, but they say "all check out working properly." Therefore, now I'm looking for a computer with numbers matching exactly, which has been a challenge, but I have found one that will have to be shipped for $125, but in researching, I keep coming across it will have to be "flashed".....

No it does not need flashed !!

You install it then it will take some driving to run all the tests

Something sounds really bad here I wish I was closer

Unless something changed since 2000 the ECM is not even in the fuel pump circuit

There are a few ecu/ecm models around... the numbers should be located on top of the part... type them into Google and it will show up. There was a similar thread a few months back regarding this same issue.
Post a pic of the part and we can go from there if you need further assistance.

So i have to womder if I am about to waist money I honestly can't afford to buying another computer?!? I did ask if it could be the injectors, but when he said he could start there and would be $1168 upfront, I choked! It's a 4 cylinder! And according to him, only $168 is for labor...
That didn't sound right to me either, and I don't even draw that in a month. After several weeks of the shop not answering or returning my calls, I was ready to pay $80 for the 3rd time to have it towed home, but he answered the phone and said " it's the computer, and I have it out. Here are the numbers if you want to look for one. I have calls into several places, but haven't heard back yet." So it's apart, so I figured I should just order the computer I finally found, and have it shipped to the shop so that I can HOPEFULLY get my ride back.
    Now I don't know what to do . ....

I'm curious why the shop is telling YOU that you need to find the parts? Isn't that their job?
I would suggest you get a 2nd opinion from another shop (I'm sure some of the members here that are more local to you would be able to suggest a reputable mechanic)
Not sure which group woud be closest to you but if you post your concerns in any of these threads you'll likely find some help from local members

    Hi MTgirl,
Thanks for the response, and the links provinded.
Actually if I had it towed somewhere else it would be the "third" opinion as I have had it towed to 2 shops already; $160 I towing so far. I do live in a rather rural area, where "reputable machanics" are 4 total, none of which have outstanding reviews . I love living in a very rural area, however, it does create higher prices, and poor quality due to the closest "city" being 30-40 miles atleast, in either direction....sad that the older folks that cared about providing good service for a small town have passed, and ones today care more about over lining their pockets. Sad, but true, and I'm sure this isn't the only area like that; times have changed SO much.

Well, I thought I would post an update .... I found a computer with matching numbers after calling ALL over the US, I had it sent to the shop 4 weeks ago, as getting a ride there is difficult to say the least. Monday I'm told the computer didn't fix it . It will still crank, but shuts back off, and shop cannot find the problem, which is believed to be something in electrical. ...... I had someone tell me " sounds lokr the crankle shaft position sensor " but who knows... So now do I have ot towed to dealership, and PRAY I can pay the repair bill... idk what to do. I was told " a bunch of guys that have been up here want to buy that truck. So if you decide to sell it let me know"
But I really do not want to sell it.... it seems like something SO simple if can only locate the issue.....
