So, I took my truck in to the dealer after playing with both actuators and switches and 4wd ECU for about a week and reaching the limitations of my ability to diagnose it. When I got there, they said I was up for a recall leaf. I said ok to that and approved 1/2 hour of labor on 4wd system diagnosis.

They are putting in these parts:

1 04005-34304 SPRING KIT, RR LEAF
1 04005-34104 FITTING KIT, RR LEAF

Now, my truck had the frame done 15k ago, and it had the clutch, leafs, and other stuff done with the frame. So, my leafs that were already installed are in nice shape- no rust, 6 clip design, 3+1 and same part number as those they are about to put on- good bushings, no squeak, etc. I also have an old man emu suspension and deaver AAL that they said they would install while doing the rear leaf recall. They said they will do AAL and two rear shocks for $165.

My question: Can I ask for my old shocks and old (but serviceable) leafs from the recall? Bad form? Any legal reason they cant give me my leafs?

By the way- new member, new to Tacoma, but not to Toyota- my 2008 4Runner was freaking great, all except for the manual trans and some minor IL rust. I traded it plus some cash for this guy- manual trans, frame replaced, 133k. Picked up the cap about 3 hours from me for $500 and we are on our way.

Also, here is the email I sent to service:

    Chris,

Thanks for all your help. I am just continuing to update my notes- per our conversation:

    -I approved:

-2.5 hrs towards full diagnosis of 4wd system allowing that if it takes less to find the issue, full time will not be alotted. You also explained to me that the time paid towards diagnosis would apply to future labor on 4wd.
-replacement of existing leaf packs with 34304 pack containing 6 clips and 3+1 leaf setup
-you quoted $165ish dollars additional to add 2 rear shocks and to install add a leaf (all these parts are in the cardboard box in my truckbed)

Additionally, I would like to take with me all the parts removed. Please place shocks and leafs in the bed of the truck. If those have already been removed at this time, just set them aside for me or I am happy to root them out of the scrap. Thanks so much. Let me know if I missed anything?

    Ben

Ahh, also- will they be able to install the AAL with the parts kit listed? Will U bolts be long enough? I still have time to run to the store and buy some if not.

Why are they putting on leaf springs that have already been done? They should be able to tell that recall has been done on your truck.

Legally speaking you are not entitled to recall or warranty parts, even if you ask. The dealer needs to tag and send them back to get credit and to ensure the parts were actually replaced. NOT the dealers policy, it is a manufacturer/federal requirement
A TSB is another story, depending on what may have been replaced you might get it if you ask.

You can request to view the parts they replaced.

    Does this answer your question?

I do not know the answer to that question- but I know they have approved a loaner car for 3 days in order to do so. I have already discussed with all the techs that the vehicle had a frame replacement. I am guessing the old leafs were replaced under the umbrella of frame replacement or TSB, so technically, the vehicle has never had the recall. They offered the recall before they ever took the truck in, so I am rolling with it...

Yes, that does answer. Thanks. I have read that other members on TW had received their leafs back from dealer. I also understand that what you are stating is different than what a given dealer does when they hand the car over. I was assuming that a leaf is not a part that they will be sending back to Toyota, but most likely could be found wherever they put their metal scrap...

I do appreciate the clarity from a legal standpoint, but I also hope they say it's no problem and load it all in the truck bed:)

No. They are your parts. Legally they have to ask if you want unbroken parts back.

They belong to YOU. YOU paid for them.

If the leafs are recalled then there is a requirement to crush/ship back/or render inop.

There are some cases where it makes no difference.

The concern with any MFG is people that resell safety or faulty items.

That said, it is worth asking if the leafs fall under the reclaim by MFG.

I know I had an issue with my R1 having a code fault in the ECU which was a “replace if customer wants” type service bulletin. Was not an actual recall, I was able to keep the ECU after I signed a paper agreeing I would not sell or offer for sale the faulty ECU...

Not sure why they would replace correct parts with new correct parts?
Typically, you wouldn’t want Recalled parts back on the market.
But in your case, that doesn’t sound like an issue.
I am still trying to figure out who is approving replacing new parts with “new” parts?

Any ways, it is cool they will install the Add a Leaf and Shocks:)

Not true, warranty and recall parts are not yours to get back.

That is true. However I thought the OP said he wanted his old leafs back that were replaced under the recall? As in they are tge new leafs not the recalled one.

Dealer just got back to me and said they need to ship the leaf in per terms of the recall. I could probably push it, but they have been good to me so far. I view $165 as a steal of a price to get the rear suspension installed. My only concern, and the reason I wanted to keep them was that I have read so much about people having issues with the recall springs performing worse than those they replaced, and I wanted to have the option of using the pack I had.

The dealer said they were gonna replace them... sounds like a second replacement...if so, take em and run. Sell em and get some duckets back.

Personally I would trust a mechanic who can’t tell the parts on the truck have been replaced with the correct updated parts. What else doesn’t he know about what he’s doing?

So, I think the leafs on truck now were replaced as part of frame replacement and covered by dealer, or they were replaced as a TSB covered item. The dealer here in IL (truck originally from NY) had the recall pop up in pre-service chat with me and had offered a loaner and recall before I even gave them the keys. I think they stand to make money from Toyota for recall, and they dont ask too many questions about the performance/ condition of the existing part if their system says to replace under recall...

Just went through this with a dealer, we looked at every TSB, recall and update available for the 2.5 version of the second gen... my rig was built 10/14 in San Antonio and due to the date, NOTHING is needed...the airbags are still TBA...lucky me.

Dealer got back to me on 4wd. Says they tested all the wiring and bench tested the actuators. Says the transfer case actuator is the issue. I will have them complete the leaf recall, add suspension, and then get the truck back and replace actuator on my own. Anyone know if/ where I can buy the servo motor parts for the inside? I already had the whole thing apart and that seems to be the trouble- magnets were unglued from stator inside motor. I tried to re-epoxy them in place, but dont think it worked.

Charged me 1.5 hrs to diagnose the actuator...

Well, in looking for a transfer case actuator it looks like OEM is around $500! Used maybe $250. What do you guys recommend? Worth the extra money or roll the dice and start building an actuator boneyard for future replacement:spending:
