I shouldn't publically admit this but I installed BOTH my front shocks like this by mistake because I was in a hurry trying to get the job done before a family event. had to drop them back out the next day to fix it... (lock ring in the back, not the other crap in the thread...)

    This is a CMC: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/3rd-gen-cmc-quick-diy.618098/

Your truck clearly doesn't have a CMC. If that's a line item, I'd be upset and potentially dispute the charge if they're unwilling to be honest with you.

Furthermore, there is absolutely no excuse for installing a Fox shock with the adjusting collar on the wrong side. That's simply a lazy installation, and they need to fix that free of cost.

I have the same shocks (2.5 body) without the reservoir, and 285/75s (33" tires). My adjusting collar is the same design as you described, that's completely normal.

If you're rubbing on the shock, then you have too much backspacing or offset on the rim. You can correct that with a wheel spacer. I run these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07D755775 with the extended lug nuts and don't rub on stock SR5 rims. The SR5 rims and SR rims have more offset (or backspacing, can't remember which), so they will need a spacer to clear 33s. Stock OR and PROs rims don't need the spacer to clear 33s. Sounds like the rims you chose need a spacer, which is your fault / problem if you chose the size and backspacing, but their problem if they did. People will trash-talk spacers all the time, but they're fine - don't stress, just install to the torque specs with loc-tite and you'll be golden.

    Hope that helps.

Not necessarily true if you’re not supposed to be making adjustments with tension on the shock. You can get all hot and heavy but it’s not lazy if it’s by design not supposed to happen.

    See bold.

No. You can adjust Fox shocks with tension on them. The installation manual says:
    Source: http://pvg-portal.ridefox.com/_context/fox/__uploads/_assets/605-01-107_REV_C.pdf

The installation manual says you can adjust preload after installation. >
They installed it in a way that doesn't allow preload adjustment after installation. >
    Therefore it was installed wrong.

It is difficult to adjust preload when they're installed, but it's not impossible. I have adjusted mine multiple times. It's way easier to adjust them on a spring compressor off the truck, but there's no problem at all adjusting them on the truck. I jack the front of the truck into the air so the wheels are off the ground, put jackstands, remove the wheel, use a shitload of pb blaster as lube on the threads, and loosen the collar. I stick a punch instead of a spanner tool in the hole and yank it like a teenager discovering his dick. The collar spins, the preload increases or decreases, rinse repeat until your preload is where you want it.

If they adjusted them before installing them on the truck or (more likely) just put them on without adjusting them, there is no excuse but laziness or inattention to detail. Why would you ever want to be entirely unable to access the ADJUSTING portion of your adjustable preload shocks?

Depends on how much preload and what spring.
I know when I had my coils swapped to 700lbs they had to use a spring compressor just to get them down to adjust.
Shop that did them said last time he tried adjusting a 700lbs spring on the fox 2.5 the spring started to dig into the adjustment collar.

I have 700lb springs too... I have a winch bumper.

Mine are Eibach 1400.300.0700s, so same spring as the factory, just higher rate. They were a BITCH to install, but not too bad to adjust.

Maybe 2nd gens are different? I just don't want OP getting the wrong idea - shocks with adjustable preload should be installed so you can adjust the preload.

    completely agree.

same thing for me haha had to upgrade to 700lbs with the ARB bumper. Not sure if 2nd gen is different. Doubt it though.

If anything I would just say its something to be aware of and to watch for when adjusting under preload.
