3rd gen tech being way behind on the Tacoma is true, it's still more tech than I want on a midsize pick up. Since I don't have any choice as a consumer as the amount of unwanted technology I want on my truck. I'm going to go with the truck that has the most advanced tech. No choices = New choices.

@nchastings , where’d you go?? Just found this thread - got any updates ?

I came from Rangers before I got my first Tacoma in 2006. Rangers were ok but way more prone to rust, electrical and mechanical problems as compared w the Tacoma.

I’d never buy a first year model- learned this from Ford with my GT350.

I got my ‘15 Tacoma used in ‘17 b/c I didn’t want a 3rd Gen. I don’t see any reason to jump ship for the next 5-7 years. Hopefully the 4th Gen Tacoma will get it right.

Another reason to stick w the Tacoma is the info and aftermarket support that’s out there. I feel I can fix, or find out how to fix, pretty much any problem I decide to on the Tacoma.

    Good thread- subbed.

I was interested in the new Ranger until I learned that there is no manual transmission available. As cool as the 10-speed auto is, I just enjoy mixing the gears myself and would find an automatic just too boring.

OP FWIW I had a 2016 SR5 2wd because that's what was in the price range I wanted to spend at the time. Dumped it after a year because of the reasons most complain about and I had a new born so I figured I needed the more room in the back seat. Recently Decided to I didn't want a full size anymore because various factor like I don't tow heavy loads, smaller foot print etc. Yes I knew I would be giving up back seat room but I learned quickly that even if your back seat is huge not many people prefer to sit between two car seats and I am only 5'7 so I fit fine with car seats. I decided to drive a Tacoma again and ended up with my 2019 TRD OR. It actually shifts so much better than the 2016 did for whatever reason. Maybe I got lucky but I really don't have any complaints like I did with the 2016. But I am curious to hear about the feedback with anyone who gets a Ranger. I was gun shy from going that route because it was relatively new and I like resale value because I typically trade up every few years. Wasn't sure what the Ranger will do because of being so new to the states. But if it proves to be a legit truck I could see myself going that route.

Thread is in the General Automotive section, not 3rd Gen section. If you don't care, why are you participating in the thread? Better for @nchastings to be the guinea pig than you or me right? More useful than being in an echo chamber.

I don't remember if it has been said in this thread, but the Ranger isn't technically "new" by all means. They have had this body style Ranger running around over seas for a while already. The 2.3L turbo 4 cylinder has been in a few different vehicles, and the 10 speed auto is from the F150 (and maybe also some Camaros?).

I'm fully prepared for all the hate from die hard Tacoma fanboys. I was a big time Toyota fanboy before I bought the 2017 TRD Pro Tacoma. But that was mainly due to the 2001 Tundra I owned before it, and damn that truck was bulletproof.
