Too shallow for an easy out imo. Slot with hand impact or drill it out. Only two options.

Ok now I’d like to ask why are you trying to remove those?? If it’s to get the Gate off you don’t have to mess with those anymore paint them up and leave it. I’m just curious.

i know thats not a philips screw, but this trick works for most screws.
i dip my screwdriver tip in some valve grinding compound for grip and use
with screw gun/hammer and penetrating oil. torch if necessary.

    Yea. You'll need an impact.
Drilling may mess up the threads . Or just re-tap.
Lol...what happens with wrong tools OP.

I'm going to say that there is close to a zero percent chance you can slot it and turn it with a screwdriver. Sounds good in theory, but difficult in reality. f'ing up your bracket is almost guaranteed with that process unless you are a magician with a Dremel. A correct sized ez out attached to a 20v impact is your best bet.

I love these threads, but this one disappoints me that there isn't a single PB blaster suggestion yet. Where is that guy?

It's a countersunk head. Won't take a lot of drilling to pop it off.

I have had luck with a center punch, hitting in the direction to remove.

    Good luck.

The word is you have to heat up the screw (not with a flame) to soften up the extra strong locktite that Toyota uses there now to break it loose. Before that, I’d set it up with the Speed Out set shown above. It’ll come out.

As was suggested, drill the head off. Use a bit about the same diameter as the screw. If you're fortunate, once the bracket is out of the way, there may be a enough sticking out that you can grab with pliers or run a left hand drill bit into. It will likely spin out once the head is drilled off, unless there is locking compound. You may need a heat gun to soften things up. Also as suggested, remove the tailgate to work on it. If you have a MIG welder, just tack a nut on it and wrench it out. There's more than one way to skin a cat.

Left hand drill bits. Easy, cheap, multi purpose. Put in cordless drill. Run in reverse SUPER slow. When the bit grabs the screw will thread out. Works every time.
