Similar concept, but instead of clutch packs the system uses the ABS to control wheel spin and simulate front and rear "on-demand" lockers without the risk of breakage and steering issues lockers have.

ATRAC for me was a huge selling feature, and I think it rocks. However since many people on this site have told me the OffRoad model is not really for off roading, I am a little disapointed.....
But ATRAC does work better than lockers IMO, and I use it at least once every couple months.
If I were to redo my truck purchase, I would get the SR5, (stronger rr diff, cheaper), and do the 4Low TRAC mod, (again), and buy beefier skidplates.
I'd rather be stuck, than broken and stuck!

I had a Jeep with Quadra Trac... the original Quadra Trac... low range and 'emergency lock out' (locked the center differential)... worked very well, when my Jeep wasn't in the shop! That was simply full time four wheel drive and no limited slip action on the front or rear.

It is not what Actice Traction Control (A-TRAC) is... not even close.

A-TRAC uses the rotation or spin sensors at each wheel to detect uneven tire rotation across an axle, then with the strong hydraulic brake booster it brakes the rotation of one tire on each axle to nearly the same rotation as the traction tire... A locker locks both tires together, but A-TRAC allows for needed rotation for turning, which the locker doesn't allow for. Turning is nearly impossible with front lockers on, and difficult with rear lockers on.

A-TRAC is fascinating technology in traction control, and is standard on the Off Road 4WD Tacomas.

Um no, why did you think that? The Off Road has both A-TRAC and the rear locking differential, the Sport has neither.

The only thing going for the non-Off Road Tacos ('09 +) is that they have the TRAC system which gives them some function of limited slip differential front and rear in H4... and with the Yellow Wire Mod, LSD in L4 too. Because they do not have the hydrauklic brake booster, TRAC isn't as strong as it is in the Off Road TRDs, however.
