You know we can see it when you drive around, right?

I'm new here. Is there something I'm missing?

It might be mostly a false sense of privacy but you gotta figure this is the internet, and there are crazy people all over the internet. More than there are that see your truck on a daily basis most likely. And if you're active on forums or social media and your photos get seen far and wide, all it takes is one of those crazies with too much time on their hands to get overly obsessed or rubbed the wrong way by something you do or say.

I don't obscure my plates personally, I thought about doing it awhile ago but..meh. But I get why some people do.

Thanks for the welcome! I've been lurking for years for the repair tutorials so I figured I should actually join.

I think people obscure plates because it makes it a fraction harder for some whack job to track them down in what is known as real life. You could consider that completely paranoid, but some folks have had experiences with batshit crazy internet goofballs and have a reason to be paranoid. Others are living life as off the grid as possible and want privacy. To each their own.

Welcome to the forum from Eastern North Carolina.

I don't understand why people bother to block their own license plate number, but what I REALLY don't understand why they block other people's numbers. Duh.

I don't mind showing my number.

There was a guy on here who posted a picture of him crossing a closed trail. Within a few minutes the thread transformed and a ton of his information was posted. So... There you go

Within an hour he scrubbed his online presence.

I didn't even know it was possible for civilians to obtain personal information with just a license plate number. Unfortunately my truck isn't cool enough that someone would come looking for it.

Co-worker of mine pulls up some database all the time. We get weird cars parked in my work parking lot. Sometimes for weeks on end. He's ex law enforcement. Not sure where he goes, but he knows who the vehicle is registered to (and other info) in minutes.

Welcome to the new age of internet technology and databases where anyone can pay to search publicly available websites for info like this. You can absolutely find a name and address for a license plate without being in law enforcement, for a nominal fee.
