    Hey everyone,

I'm moving from California to the Vegas area pretty soon, and was wondering, other than the actual move, what I should prepare myself for. I know it's hot, and I know to stay off the strip. Just looking to get situated smoothly. Also, I'm not trying to Californicate the area (big reason for the move). So yeah, if you don't like Vegas, no need to reply. I picked this area because the wife and I love it.

    Thanks.

I moved from Vegas a few months ago. I loved the place. The western side is nicer. The further east you move, the...messier things can be. I lived in Providence (NW corner). It has a lot of people but isn't terribly crowded compared to the strip. It gets hot in the summer (shocker), above 100, and surprisingly cold in the winter. It snowed pretty nicely a few weeks after I left.

Don't have to stay off the strip. Plenty of amazing things to do and see there. Me personally, I rarely went there. Not a people guy.

If you like Pho, a Vietnamese dish, go to Pho Kim Long (say it out loud) for the best pho I've ever had. It's in Chinatown.

Vegas > literally all of CA. Have fun!

Thanks for the insight! Yeah, I tend to stay away from tons of people as well lol. I'll also be in the southwest side since we didn't like the east side either.

Plenty of places to wheel and hike. Probably my biggest regret was not going to more of those places before leaving, even though I had my taco for the last 6 months and was out of town for 2 of them.

I live in Henderson (Green Valley area). Red Rock Canyon - NO 'S' it's not "Red Rocks" - has an AWESOME off-road drive, IMO, called Rocky Gap Rd. There's a daily fee, or you can pay for a yearly pass ($30 I think?) Red Rock Canyon. If you drive out SW, following HWY 160, you can find some great dirt roads that lead up through the back-side of the Spring Mountains. There's a full road that goes through the mountains from Red Rock and kicks you out at Kyle Canyon (the route from Vegas to Mt. Charleston). A lot of this will make more sense after studying maps...

North of Vegas about 100 miles on HWY 95, you'll find Big Dunes, sand park... Zion is only 3 hours from Vegas to Entrance gate... West Rim Grand Canyon is 3 hours to the gate. South Rim is 5 hours to the gate. Arches is 6 hours, through a off-road back-road to BLM land, near Delicate Arch.

Glad you're not into "californicating" the area... People always ask me how often I go to the strip. I then ask them 2 questions, 1 - when you come to Vegas what's the MAX. time you spend here and why (a: usually the answer is 3 or 4 days and it's because it's expensive and I run out of money) "here's your sign." 2 - when's the last time you went somewhere on purposes, on your day-off that was CROWDED with tourists that complain, don't pay attention to where they walk, and then get super drunk? (usually the answer is never) "here's your sign."

Other than the 3 months of 100+ heat, it's pretty mellow the rest of the year. BIG TIP: Buy your big-ticket items online, if possible, search for free-shipping, and online retailers are not required by law to charge sales tax (although some still do). I pay less than 2% sales tax per year, that includes going out for dinner a couple times, every week.

HMU, if you want more info!

where in Vegas are you moving? stay away from east Vegas and north east Vegas. I lived in southern highlands and enjoyed it. Join the facebook gun groups if you like shooting guns, because theres lots of places to drive out to the desert and start shooting. I used to drive to sloan every weekend, but I heard BLM might be shutting that down due to people not picking up after themselves..so look into that. I didnt care for Vegas, but the politics are historically much better than California, with the exception of Sisolak.

Yes, I did it in a full-stock 2.7L 4cyl. TBH, though, I've never run the whole thing. I've only driven from inside the park up to the Northpeak pull-off. My best guess is that's about 2/3 of the run...

I have a V6 now, stock height/suspension still, just wanting to replace the leaf springs before I go wheeling again. I just bought this truck and have been checking off the maintenance list. Leaf springs are literally the last thing!

Lol at not Californicating Vegas. Vegas is a mini CA. Clark county is why NV is starting to suck.

I was out there last year around this time and happened upon this sign. I was in a rental car so wasn’t about to attempt anything lol

I’m from Indiana, but would love to take my Tacoma out there and run it.

Probably a good idea - it's not bad, but it's definitely not car friendly...

All great advice . Thanks everybody for the replies. Finally closing on a home this week. Would've been here sooner but it took forever to sell my home in the Bay Area (60 day close, good grief). I've been back and forth between CA and NV and I'm glad to have 95% of my belongnings here. @mcm808 The wife and I were staying at an air bnb in Southern Highlands for about a month while we were house hunting. She has actually been out here since June for her job. Wish I could afford to live in that area lol.

I'll be in the Anthem/Inspirada area and I'm super excited and relieved to finally be closing escrow. Drove to Jean just for kicks and my buddy has shown me a couple spots to shoot in Sloan. Can't wait to settle down and officially be a Nevadan.

If you like outdoor activities you'll love it. If you have fond memories of the Strip when you were younger, be prepared to let those go and eventually hate going there. Overall the city is comfortable place to live.

Moved to Vegas from SoCal and lived there for almost 16 years then moved to Houston and we hated it. Lived there for 3 years and moving back to Vegas on the 28th of April. Can’t wait to be back home. Vegas is a great place. There is just so much to do there outside of the casinos. Plus you are still close to all the things Cali has. We lived in the Aliante area and are moving back to that area until we buy a house early next year.
