No, what's clear is that you don't understand how the system works or how to control it. Knowledge is power, your lack of the former is why you're scared of it.

The modern electronics provide better control under standard parameters than can me input by me. It can prevent intentional driver input that is deemed “outside of the standard operating parameters”. I don’t know if it can be fully turned off, I think it can. The fact is, if it isn’t fully off I would not know in most circumstances. Data collection of what the vehicle and the driver are doing and have done could be helpful or hurtful to the driver depending. Privacy regulations protect us until they don’t. I have spent most of my life involved in control system technology. I know enough to not sit here and tell people that I know everything. I do know that there are two edges to this sword. I think that electronic control aids are amazing and improving but I also know that George Orwell’s wonderful prognostications and imagination may well not have gone far enough.

I hope when I get to my mothers age and can’t drive, the car will do it for me. “Car, take me to a restaurant with a great steak and fine single-malt scotch please”. At the same time, I don’t want anyone to be able to figure out where I was in the past. We need our engineers, we don’t need quite so many people “serving” in our government “helping”. I don’t want to be saved from myself and I fear the regulations more than the problems they address in many cases.

Regarding my tinfoil hat; I know that copper foil properly grounded would work better. :D

Time has passed since this thread was started. I own a 2018 with Adaptive Cruise Control. I don't use it often, I don't drive places where Cruise Control is appropriate often. When I do, the ACC works well for me, and accomplishes what I found I had to do manually in my 2 Gen when I used Cruise in it. Namely, turn off Cruise when approaching slower traffic, but with a line of vehicles in the passing lane, delaying my opportunity to effect a pass and settle back into my set speed.

Seems the Lane Assist has become a part of the conversation, and where I drive it is worse than useless. Most of the PA roads I drive are littered with potholes all year round. They are barely wide enough for legitimate two-lane, though they have a center line, and there are walkers, bike riders, mailmen, garbage trucks, delivery trucks, lawn service vehicles, Amish horse and buggy, . . . so that a couple hundred yards without a legitimate need to cross the yellow line is a rarity. The beeping of the dang thing drives me crazy. Fortunately, it is easy to turn off, and doesn't reset (Like ECT) every time you restart. I haven't tried it since the first week of ownership, and don't expect to try again.

true if you are not concerned about the magnetic influence of bad actors (govt, area 51, etc). without looking back thru the thread, i think someone brought that up. a ferro-magnetic material that is electrically conductive would be the best. iron or nickel foil would work. neither copper or tin suffice for magnetic shielding.:)
edit: actually...a helmet, rather than a hat, would be better. the heavier the better for magnetics. i would not want to mislead here.

i think the point of the hat is to create a faraday cage. i am pretty sure grounding is not the right thing to do in that instance. we need to keep this practical!

You got me there.:) Grounding may not matter but could well act as an antenna too. nuclear radiation shielding aside, not sure how to close off at the neck so I’ll be working on a full suit! Lead underpants?

I live in a pretty hilly area, the adaptive cruise works ok going down hill. but going uphill I use the non adaptive cruise, otherwise the auto trans will be shifting a hundred times a minute. I may opt for a manual in the future.

Not to doubt you, but have you tried both ways --understand my Taco does not have the "adaptive, but on our Subaru with the "system" this makes no difference. The cruise (I thought) was to maintain the set/target speed? Of course this is when it is not tracking another vehicle in front of you. Does the Toyota system act differently here?
