I posted this in the first gen section but got no response. Is the tow rating for a 1st gen Tacoma 5K or 6K with the 3.4l? I have always read 5K but on the factory mounted hitch and in the owners manual is says 6K. Insight on this?

I've only seen the 5k rating, so I guess I'll have to check my owner's manual. Regardless, your truck will not like towing 5k, much less 6k. My first trailer weighed 2200 pounds and it wasn't too bad to tow. My current trailer weighs 3500 pounds and even with a supercharger, trailer brakes, and a weight distributing hitch, I wouldn't want to tow anything heavier.

Ya I probably won’t ever touch anything close to 5K. I was just curious because I seen 6K on the hitch. Wasn’t sure if they did something in the later years that helped towing

That hitch might fit a full size truck and handle 6000 lbs. It doesn’t mean your truck will do it.

I didn’t think so. 6K is a lot for the 3.4. Even 5K is a lot. Just wasn't sure about it.

Both are Stock - built correct from the start.
This is ridiculous, but it’s a page from my owners manual. (2003 Tacoma).

They don't design a hitch for the truck, they take a hitch off the shelf and put it on your truck. What a hitch is rated for doesn't dictate the truck?

On the sticker it says that 2002 & up is rated for 6K, that’s what is confusing me. Because I’ve always heard 5K. Just curious about it
