Yeah, 30 plus years...my best friend in high school.

After high school, we went off to separate colleges.
He spiraled down pretty quick, dropped out, and became a full-fledged alcoholic.
    I was his last friend.

He got into AA and cleaned up, got married. Good for him on that.
The wife and I would visit from time to time.
I'd take him hunting (I used to be a fanatic for hunting Ruffed Grouse).
Invited him to my club to shoot trap whenever he could make it.

    Here's the friendship breaker:
He went from being mentored in AA (or whatever they call it, we hardly ever discussed AA)...to being a mentor for others.
    Again, good for him.
But he developed quite the attitude.
Real self righteous, corncob up his ass.
I'm like...Hey man, I remember back when, (but never said it out loud).

One day he insinuated I should get into AA. He'd never seen me take a drink in almost 30 years.
This was about 15 years ago, and by that time I might have 2 beers on a Friday evening. If that.

    Man, that really tore it.
But I guess if you're a hammer, all you see is nails.

We stopped visiting, and the invites to hunt or come to my club ceased.
He didn't contact me, which was a relief, I must say.
His wife sent Christmas cards for a few years until that ceased too.

    How strange.
Did he change, or was he an obsessive personality all along?

Personally, I think we're all just people with all our flaws and warts.
I'm willing to wink at other people's foibles, so long as they aren't destructive.
And I hope self righteousness is not one of mine.
Because it really rubs me raw.

That was my exact schedule until I (semi) retired.
Except I was usually up by 3-3:30 am. Needed the coffee. :p

It's taken me almost a year to be able to consistently sleep until dawn. No later.

I got up and took the pup out to pee. Then decided to take a nap. I think old age is catching up with me.

It makes for long days because the wife is a stay at home mom... so she doesn’t get up early like I do. In fact.. usually the kids get her up lol around 9-10 am. (Must be nice) so me going to bed early (like 9 pm) almost never happens cause the kids are not tired and getting them to go to bed that early is hard. Usually I’m in bed by 10:30 or 11 pm.

    Apropos of nothing...
Here's the only critter I ever took to the taxidermist.
    A Ruffed Grouse.

This one had a territory of several acres.
All one hunting season, once a week I'd check that spot.
That darn grouse would hear me coming and would get on the other side of a big tree.
It would wait until I was almost there and flush. Oftentimes I wouldn't even see it, much less get a shot.
A Ruffed Grouse unexpectedly flushing close by is enough to make you jump.
Or maybe even piss your pants. It's loud.

My wife would ask me how I did.
I'd say: Smartaleck snookered me again. :p
Until one day, finally, it didn't.

    Those looked pretty spendy.

Personally, I'm thinking a cap and sleeping platform with storage underneath.
I have an access cab with 6 foot bed.
And a tent for setting up at a camping spot.
    Traveling/camping light.
