Swapped my grill out for TRD pro grill everything good with the swap but now after about 10 minutes of driving getting an indicator light telling me pre collision is unavailable to clean sensor. Anyone else getting this issue and know of a fix.

    Thanks

I only (rarely) get this issue when it's raining. If you purchase the garnish it is supposed to fix this but I don't like the look of it so I didn't put the garnish on.

Drive it 100 miles or so and see if it goes away. That’s what mine did. Has to adapt to the new obstruction. In a slightly different spot than factory.

You DO NOT NEED the garnish.

Drive the truck for a few days and the warning will go away. The sensor needs to recalibrate.

Mine took over a week and over 300 miles and never cleared up. I also decided I didn’t like the look so I went back to the factory but put the sr trim piece around it instead of the bling ring it came with.

It will function without the garnish, but in return you have very little protection for the sensor itself. Personally I chose not to skip the installation of the garnish to ensure protection of the sensor. I don't imagine it is a cheap part to replace. I'm guessing the same size rock that cracks your windshield can do some or equivalent damage to the sensor. Just my 2 cents.

Are you guys saying the sensor has AI and will just adjust to it's new sitting? I'm about to swap mine and don't want to freak out and bring it in immediately. I did buy the garnish but will have to adjust with the recall patch already on also.

It's not "AI", it's automated calibration.

OP, is it an OEM Pro grille or a faux grille? The majority of time this will occur to the faux grille. Ask me how I know...

I’ve got a 19. Switched the grill to the pro grill. Had error messages immediately. Drove it for a week with malfunction messages. Ordered the oem garnish and installed that about 10 days after the grill. Malfunction messages continued for a few days. I gave up and put the factory grill back on and went by one of the Toyota dealerships that had the trd off road just like mine on the showroom with some upgrades including the pro grill. I asked them what their work around was for the grill sensor. They told there was not one and that whoever purchases that truck will have to sign a waiver accepting that the tss system has been disabled. The service manager said that eventually there might be a fix to that due to the history of customization of the Tacomas but at this time there was it one.
Now I’m hearing that the system automatically recalibrated which is opposite of what the dealership told me. I also drove almost 2 weeks with the malfunction message beeping at me every time I drove it.
As a new Tacoma owner I’m finding so much conflicting information in these message threads about many things that I’m questioning my ability to trust the message threads for information. Since the grill change out literally takes 10 minutes, I guess I’ll change it again and see if anything changes over a period of time driving it.

If the garnish wasn't needed, Toyota wouldn't spend money on designing and installing them. I also don't think that sensor recalibrates itself. If it did, there would be no need for a complicated calibration procedures, IMO.

I have an '18 and I recently did the Pro grill swap as well. My dad has a 17 Pro and didn't like the grill so I took it when he upgraded so it only cost me $70 to get the OEM grill garnish from my local dealer. I wanted to stick with the OEM parts because I heard Toyota might start throwing a fit if you do anything that messes with the sensor and figured it would help my argument if everything was OEM. That being said I still did get a "temporarily unavailable, clean sensor" message the other day after driving for about 40 min. in heavy rain; but to be fair, that happened with the factory grill as well. Our Subaru also has a similar system and that doesn't work in heavy rain either. Make sure your sensors are clean and don't expect it to be perfect in all conditions.

I left my after market grill in for a couple more weeks and the malfunction alert never went away. I took it in last week for my 5,000 mile service. The service attendant said that there might be a recall on the sensor when I checked in so I told him I had the pro grill on the truck. He made a note and I hung out in the waiting room for about an hour while they did the service. When I picked it up, there was no alert and everything looked good. He said the service tech did something with it and it’s now working. So, it’s fixed and looks great. Just don’t know what he did while doing the service.

I used all OEM Pro parts when I swapped my grille (grille, sensor wire, garnish) and never had an issue. I started the truck half way through the swap to move it out of the sun and it threw an error with the sensor unplugged. When I finished and plugged it back in the error msg went away and never have had a single TSS issue since the swap.

TSS even activated with the BRAKE warning appropriately about a week after the swap. I brought it in for it's 5K service and the dealer did not care about the swapped grille since it was all OEM and not knockoff parts.
