Looking for a hitch mount bike rack for my 2016 Tacoma TRD Sport.
Getting tired of throwing the bike in the bed and putting even more scratches on the panels.
Any ideas of how to LOCK a hitch mount bike rack, and are there any racks that will allow me to lower the tailgate?

Yes. You can get locking ones plus locking hitch pin. There racks that tilt as well.

I have the older version of this one
    https://www.curtmfg.com/part/18085

Yakima, Thule and lots of other companies make them as well

1up racks. Best racks on the market in my opinion.

Thule and Yakima both make receiver mounted racks that lower your bikes enough to open the tailgate, and it does lock to your truck, but you have to lock your bike separately too and I would still use an extra cable to secure your bike to the rack and both to truck.

    I got the Apex:

Thule 9025 Apex 4 Bike Hitch Rack https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00653V6N6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_7Y7rDb953J47V

Since I refused to install a hitch on my Corvettes, I went the sea sucker route. Just throwing it out there; don't need to use the Tacoma only for carrying your bikes :crapstorm:

I really like that curt rack because it appears that you just drop the wheels into the tray, and then lock the bike down with the ratcheted arm on the top, right?
I'm only traveling 2 or 3 miles to a park with a nice bike path, and looking for a rack that I don't have to spend 15 minutes setting it up, adjusting straps, and making sure the wheels don't wobble and hit the bumper, etc. The locking option and being able to lower the tailgate, not to mention the price range seems to be a winner.

if just routinely 2-3 miles, why not a tailgate mat?

The Curt seems nice but pretty expensive for what you say you need. For less than half the price check this. Reese Carry Power SportWing Hitch Mount Bike Carrier, 4 Bikes

I have the Reese SportWing. Full access to the truck bed.

A cheap option is the Allen 522R which bolts on and will fold down for tailgate access. $79 on Amazon.

I have a Kuat Sherpa two bike and an old Saris 2 or 4 bike. Both are Craigslist finds, the Kuat is light and easy for my wife, the Saris weighs approx 1 (one) shit-ton but was cheap.
I would recommend a 1-upUSA. They are simple, brilliant and solid. I was at a Mt. Bike race yesterday and noticed how they seem to be giving the big brands (Yakima and Thule) a run for their money with close to half the racks being 1-upusa. Not cheap, only available direct from them I believe, and made in the USA. Buy once, cry once.

1up. I have the single tray with one add on. It's so nice that most of my bike transporting is just my bike... so no need for multiple trays until I really need it. The only disadvantage to this setup is that I think there's a max of 3 trays when you start with the single. I also got the fatbike kit, and use it 100% of the time, as it still holds my road bike just fine. I bought the smaller sized hitch post and an adaptor to fit in a 2" hitch. That way I can move it to other cars with smaller hitches.

It also folds up smaller than other brands if storage off the truck is an issue.

Get one of the Yakima Hold Up models. I’ve “ sold” 7 of them to my biking friends. Bikes on and off in less than 30 seconds. Nothing touches your frame.
Comes with a lock for the rack, and a locking cable for each bike, and a bottle opener.

I've had a Yakima Holdup for years now, works fine. I just can't trust my friends to load their bikes on it correctly. Easy to strip the rear wheel ratchet straps or position the front wheel arms wrong or loose if you've never used it before. Going to a Northshore NSR4 next, can fit four bikes in the same space that my Holdup fits two.

The racks I like the least are the ones that hang the bikes from the top tube. Don't seem too secure and depending on the frame they can put your bike on an awkward angle or not fit at all.
