Hey everyone, i am currently considering ordering a 2020 tacoma 2wd 4cyl access cab. I am just waiting on the 2020 online builder to go live on the website. while researching this truck I have heard a lot about transmission issues. I was just wondering if the issues have been fixed in 2019? I saw like 2 videos on youtube about a 2018 tacoma running at about 3500 RPM going 70 ? do these trucks do this normally?

I've just about emptied my first tank of gas. Averaged 22.7 mpg near the end. Towed the jetskis yesterday for the first time (2500lbs), dipped down to 21.7 I don't anticipate my towing averages to be that high, but man, coming from a 2014 Titan couldn't be happier. I don't have a lead foot to begin with, but no matter how I drove that Titan, it was stuck at around 12.7mpg for the last year and a half. So, I will say, too soon to tell real mpg. I will say, I've had 3 full size trucks. An 04 Tundra with a 4.7, an 07 Tundra double cab 5.7, and a 14 Titan crew 5.6. They all got shit mpg's. For real. If anyone tells you they have a full size v8 truck and the mileage is good, they lie about other things. LOL I think trucks and engines keep getting bigger and more powerful because people keep getting bigger. I realize all people fit in cars differently, however, I am 6' on the nose, and this Tacoma is the most comfortable truck I've had. Not sure why, but it is.

I have a 4x4 6 cyl, and the tranny runs fine. There are lots of options for controlling where it shifts, such as the ECT button and S mode. At the end of the day, it is truck and drives like a truck (i.e. not a sports car). If you want to make it run up to 3500 at 70, you can do that. Just stick it into S4 and that shift limits it to 4th gear (sometimes handy when you are towing). This engine has more torque at the higher RPMs, so that can be desirable. My Fiat Spider redlines at 6000, and I often run it up over 4000 just for the fun of it, so I am not sure what the issue is with 3500, when needed.

I'm running about 2600-2800 in 6th gear in my TRD pro (manual)

A 2 wheel drive and a 4 cylinder? Road princess!

These motors are designed to run at that rpm for best MPG and also power related purposes. My manual runs at a higher RPM and I am glad because if not it would be a dog and constant shifting on slight inclines.

Toyota gave me a loaner TRD sport automatic that got 26-27mpg. My TRD pro manual gets 19 if I baby the Accel and decel. That was a bummer to discover. Why such a drastic difference in ecomony between transmissions?

There is no issue at all with quality. ^^^this is just trolling.

For sure, people do not like the shift points Toyota chose in pursuit of better economy, but there is no issue with the quality of the transmission.

People who say it lacks reliability or quality are not thinking for themselves or using critical thinking at all. The 3G AT has been proven to be bulletproof, though much hated for the way it shifts.

You know the trolls are presently typing madly, searching, scouring the web for that one or two examples out of nearly a million 3G tacos.

With the sudden popularity of Offroad driving (“overlanding”.....uggh...cough) and thousands of newbs selling their Nissan Skylines to buy Tacoma’s, that they subsequently burden with huge fuckin tires, RTTs, and thousands of pound of overland brick-a-brack, it is testament to how strong the 3.5L motor and the 6sp AT is that the truck puts up with the abuse from these guys and gals who have no idea what they are doing. I’m sure half of the them are churning up the hills in 4hi and don’t know how to operate an AT in any mode other than “D” anyways.

    Bravo Toyota.

It would have to be the diff. Makes alot of sense. I'm all stock. I think the pro has slightly bigger tires but I'm not a guru. I don't drive fast, I rarely go over the speed limit. I drive like a grandpa headed to church on sunday. Lol.

All years have been software updated, even my 2016.
Tranny was never broken, just did not shift as aggressive as some would like.
I don't even remember seeing a post about a broken Tranny yet.
