Have owned Tacomas since they first came out and all have been amazing vehicles with no issues. I purchased a 2017 TRD offroad 4x4 with autimatic transmission and man this is the mother truck of all LEMONS. The transmission started having issues at 15 miles. Brought it back to Capital Toyota in San Jose where i purchased the truck. Dealership says i have all the software upgrades and its fine. No way, then why when i come to a stop is the downshifting function delayed where it clunks hard and literally pushes the truck forward ( with my foot on the brake pedal) as if i am being rear ended by a little old lady in.her Galaxy 500? Also wont shift out of third gear sometimes and rpm's climb upward to 5000rpm so let foot off pedal then it shifts after rpms fall to about 2500rpm. Foot on gas pedal is steady not accellerating and it wont get out of third gear, not going up an incline either. I have had several 2017 TRD off road owners come up to me and ask me if my truck does this and i say yes. Filed a complaint with NHTSB and the dealer and it went nowhere. I am stuck with a lemon and its such a bummer. This is the last Toyota I will probably ever own. Internet forums all say transmission problems fixed in the 2018 model ....really????? Anyone else have this issue? If so how did you get this problem fixed?

Welcome to TW! Sorry to hear of your issues, man that really bites with a new vehicle. I have a 2015 and have had no issues.
I would contact the dealership in writing and forward a copy to Toyota America (not sure who you contact there but I'm sure someone on TW knows and will post).

I’ve got an ‘18 that has what I consider a janky tranny, but it falls in-line with everything I see here. I’ve “gotten used to truck”, and it stays very consistent. I had an ‘06 Taco that also had the bump you mentioned, and that truck was rock solid reliable as long as I owned it (6yrs and 72k).

As soon as my warranty runs out, I’ve been thinking about getting that OVTune. As I understand it, that’s supposed to really improve how the transmission behaves. Too bad Toyota didn’t do better on this from the factory.

    What is OVtune?

I did file a complaint with Toyota Corporate and they have it on file in case there is ever a recall. NHTSB says talk to dealership, which i have done multiple times......dealership just says it has all software upgrades and is fine......yesterday it would.not ahift out of third on three separate occcasions....should have kept my 2012 Tacoma TRD 4x4...it was amazing. I love this teuck but the transmission issue is just rediculous. The other thing it does is when accellerating and between gears it makes a high pitched noise most of the time....dealership cant figure that out either....maybe a heat shield vibration although it sound.more internal from.the engine...

There’s a ton of OVTune info here at TW, but here’s a link to the website:

Could that be the suspension and not the tranny? My 2007 did that at a stop and after a few seconds on google it turned out to be the suspension and is pretty normal. The shifting thing is just Toyota’s poor design. The 3rd gen Search’s for for gears is fairly common like it’s unsure where it wants to be.
