Bought a 2005 extended cab 4X4 4 cylinder, 5-speed manual. Going through a lot of oil, probably looking for re-built/salvage 2TR-FE engine in Denver. Hello

How much exactly? Do you see leaking anywhere or signs of it? Plus do you smell it at high rpms?

Around 4-5 quarts a month, sometimes black smoke at tail pipe, no visibly dripping, 236,000 miles

Your head gasket is probably beyond shot. I know mine is, but not that noticeable in the exhaust like that is yet.

Mines only 2 or so quarts within 5 or so months.

Been a while... finally found a used 2013 with 39000 miles and dropped into the Taco. 3” lift, 285 tires on 17” rims, new clutch, recalled frame replacement and rock sliders added....feels like a new truck. Drove into the Doll House in the maze
