Tundra steering rack upgrade

Has anyone upgraded their steering rack to a Tundra rack? I know Solo Motorsports sells one modified and ready to be fabbed in. Anyone have any experience with this? Or modifying a Tundra rack themselves?

 

What would the potential benefit of this be? Different steering ratio?

 

Larger steering shaft and bushings to hopefully last longer and increase overall rigidity of the steering rack

It looks like a healthy upgrade but for the price and fab work you'd really have to justify it. Hopefully Marlin releases theirs soon.

Much cheaper to just replace existing rack with warrantied reman units as needed unless you really have a race truck

 

This seems awesome but the price is a killer.

I'm seeing reman Tundra racks on ebay in the $200-$300 dollar range. Is it worth $1200 to cut down the shafts and bump up line pressure? The line pressure thing might be as simple as an orifice change or adjustment. Plus it still needs fab work to fit the Tacoma.

I could see $1500 if it was a super tough bolt on. It makes me wanna get a rack from the wrecking yard to experiment with...

I was considering hacking up a tundra rack. I'm curious as to what exactly needs to be done to a tundra rack to make it compatible with our tacos. Could possibly just get it machined myself

 

@Arcticelf has one, perhaps he can provide some insight. I know he was telling me about it the other weekend.

 

The voodoo in the solo rack is the valveing changes. Otherwise it's just cutting the Piston down and re-tapping the inner tie rod holes. Both the solo and Marlin rack with make turning big tires easier, and stronger.

Mounting it isn't that hard, you have to move the mounts 1/2" farther apart center to center, so 1/4" each.

If the Marlin rack is bolt on, that would be a huge advantage. Otherwise I understand it's pretty similar.

The other thing to consider is that the tie rods are matched for the rack on our trucks. Beefing up the rack makes them a real weak spot. Beefing up tie rods makes the spindle a weak spot.

Bottom line, I'm very happy with my solo rack, and would recommend it, or something like it.

 

not when the replacement job is a total cunt like on the 3rd gens.

I wonder if theres an option for doing this on the 3rd gen.
I'm currently waiting on Toyota corporate to say whether they will warranty my steering rack thats fucked already at 58,000km

 

pretty sure marrack is a no go for stock. need to run their LT kit

 

I did my tundra rack mod myself...and soon I'm gunna be offering a few options for people to help with the cost making this mod more affordable and helping me buy parts for my LS swap lol...

I'm gunna offer a complete modded rack assembled.
And
Offer machining services for the rack gear and control valve if you have a rack and take it apart and send me those parts...

My dad and I are workin on making a general dissassembly/reassembly video for youtube and a general overview of what you gotta do for the install.

The Marrack...from the looks of it they say must be used on LT and it looks like they're using the factory inner tierods which also makes me wonder if they even shorten the rack gear?..... there's no reason why a tundra rack modded to the Tacoma width wont work on a stock width truck.

And no it's not quite as simple as just chopping and retapping....the rack gear is hollow and you must make a press fit chromoly insert for one side and tig weld it in then post machine it flat....its a bit of work to do it...even with all the right tools(which I have)

 

Pretty sure the inners are beefier on marrack and based on their thread it won't work because it's too long to fit without LT.

but I'm definitely interested to see a Tundra swap for a 3rd Gen

Exactly my point....all they're doing is swapping in a rack directly....which is poop sandwhich as far as bumpsteer geometry goes...the inner tierods on a tundra are alot beefier than the taco ones...which makes me wonder if they even machine them down or not
