Was the dog charging to attack, or just happy and wanting to play? Vicious dogs tend to give warning, and playful dogs go right into the chase game. Mine would charge too - there's someone new to pet them.

The officer's inexperience truly makes this an unnecessary tragedy. Here's the rest of the story.
    https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/02/us/homeless-woman-killed-cop-arlington-texas.html

Dogs are inherently good - it's people that make them vicious. People are much the same way. He got scared and made an atomic fuck up.

My dad taught me when I was a kid that the easiest and safest way to deal with a dog attacking you was to let it, and shove your arm as far down its throat as you can. They can't bite when they're gagging, and it scares them. He later killed a neighbor's GSD when it got loose (had already bitten a meter reader and all of its family members) and came at him. He made a fist, presented the fist to the dog, and shoved a little too hard and broke the dog's windpipe. Scared all of us, and the dog's owner threatened to kill my dad right there in the street...in front of two police officers. They took him away, and a month later they moved (they were renting and the event gave their landlord reason to evict them).

Hard to say what the dog was doing. You can tell the officer can see the woman in the shade since you can hear him ask if she's ok. Tragic mistake to fire with her in that direction.

My dogs are generally protective and like you said, give warning. If someone is at the door they'll guard it, if the dogs are put away before someone comes over and I let them out after the person is already inside they understand it's not an intruder and they'll want to be pet. Well one does every time, the other is a little cautious if she doesn't know you and will avoid until she gets comfortable. Then she'll randomly come up to you haha.

This happened down the street from where I was born & raised (haven't lived there in 15+ years thankfully). He failed miserably here. He got scared & over-reacted. My job often puts me in lots of places w/loose dogs w/the majority of them being pit bulls (this dog was <40lb lab mix). I've jumped on/over fences, on cars, climbed trees, whatever. He could've done 3 other viable things:
Jump onto the fence that was <2' from him, used his taser or used his asp baton. He chose the most extreme measure & deployed it improperly. Like someone else said, ALWAYS know what's BEYOND your target.
He will be charged w/manslaughter for this.

Florida couple's toilet explodes after lightning reacts with gas in septic tank

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (WTHR) — A Florida couple was having a relaxing Sunday morning listening to the storms, until MaryLou Ward heard a loud bang.

"It was the loudest noise I've ever heard," she said.

That noise was the sound of the couple's toilet exploding after their septic tank got struck by lightning.

"We gout out of bed and came over here, and the toilet was laying on the floor," Ward said. Her porcelain toilet had blown to pieces.

The company that's now working to repair the bathroom explained how it all happened.

Confirming lightning struck near the Wards' septic tank, the experts said the lightning ignited the methane gas in the sewer pipes, causing the explosion.

It's a rare incident, but Ward isn't taking anymore chances.

"I'm not taken any showers and not going to the bathroom," she said. "Not when it's thunderstorming and down here, that's a lot."

Ward also said she warned her kids to stay away from the bathroom during thunderstorms.

Thankfully, the repairs are covered by insurance.
