2nd gen key won't unlock door, only turns over ignition

Definitely hit up the dealer no matter what. Probably an honest mistake but you should be made whole.

Good news is if not you have a key that's cheap to obtain..no chip

 

I hope so. I'll get a hold of the guy who sold it to me. He was pretty chill about everything during the sale, but I won't hold my breath. Can't hurt to ask though. I would just like to have a spare or two in case, and I'm one of those people I guess that probably uses the key just as much as the fob to unlock the doors so it would be nice to have one that does it. I think I'm going to try lubing up the lock to see if this one fits. It's definitely a valet/sub key from what I've seen and what you guys said but it should work to at least unlock the drivers side, assuming the ignition hasn't been changed.

 

of you’re turning it to the point you think it’s going to break, it’s not a lubrication issue. it’s a valet key issue. if the dealership is cool, maybe they’ll help you out. they’re not o lighted to at this point so good luck with that!

The valet key should at least unlock the driver door though, right? Maybe it's just a jacked up key altogether.

 

I would not have walked off the lot with a valet key. like everyone else stated...go to the stealership and speak with them

 

i bought mine used and it didn’t come with a valet key, but it should have the exact same functionality as a master key, except it can’t be used to program new keys. this is the key would give to “valet” parker’s to ensure they can’t copy the key to steal your ride later.

this is the typical definition of a valet key, so it should lock/unlock all doors and start the truck just fine.

 

Hate to tell you, but you're wrong. As you stick the key in the lock, the tumblers move up and down. When the lock is all gummed up or dry, the tumblers move up, but do not snap back down. The result is the lock won't turn, just like if you stuck in the wrong key. The OP may still have other problems, but maybe not.

All valet keys for all cars/trucks will unlock the doors. You wouldn't expect a valet to just leave your vehicle unlocked in an unattended parking lot somewhere, would you?

 

I've not had a vehicle with a valet key, so I defer on that point. But worst case like people said, if the lock cylinder is toast it's a simple thing to change out.

Eh, the valet could lock the door before closing it though.

 

Well, I got the key I have to unlock the driver's side door. Some WD-40 and a few insertions of the key loosened it up and now it will open the door just fine. I had a cheap key from Walmart made temporarily that will at least get me in the truck (wont' turn over the ignition) in case I lock my keys inside the vehicle.

I'm wanting to get a second spare however that will actually turn the vehicle over but I'm confused as to whether or not the key I have is actually a valet key or not. It does have the grey rubber on top, but some others have said that if it was an actual valet key, it would only let me drive the vehicle so far without shutting it off. I've driven the truck a few thousand miles so far now and haven't had this issue. So I really don't know. I bought some key blanks on Amazon and was going to have them cut and do the circus routine that is programming them, but if it is an actual valet key, then obviously that wouldn't work.

 

Very cool! Glad it was that simple. Now as for your valet key. It is claimed that the ONLY thing different about the valet key for Tacos is that it won't allow you to add more keys. However..... at least 1 TW member was successful programming more keys using the ebay smart key maker. He was in the same situation as you.

I only received 1 master key with my truck. I have tried doing the tap dance procedure and was unsuccessful. I programmed more with Techstream.

 

Far as I know that statement about the driving distance is bull.

Very possible too that the lock cylinders were tight, seems like you resolved the driver's side at least.

 

I've called around every shop in town here, including the dealership. Seems like getting a master key cut and coded for the truck is going to be somewhere between $85-$150, depending on who I take it to. I have some blank keys as well I got online that can be cut and coded as well, but unfortunately since I only have the valet I can't program them myself or else I would just take them and have them cut, then code them with the open/close doors/insert keys/blah blah routine. I will have to dig a little more into those programs/kits that let you program from a valet and se if it's possible for me.

Okay, I will definitely take a look at both of these. I did look at the smart key maker but didn't get very in-depth with it.

I looked up TIS Techstream too and found this:

I'm curious though...although most people in the reviews claim good results, the Techstream website is quite a bit more expensive for a license than that. Maybe this is some kind of Chinese knockoff? I guess I really don't care as long as it works.

 

I figured that's what it was. I've seen this too many times with older cars and keyless entry. Sometimes the key never gets used to open the door...ever. Years later someone tries to use it and boom. Frozen

 

All of the Techstream versions that are less than $100 are Chinese pirated software. I have it on a laptop and it works. However, I don't know if you can program keys starting out with just a valet key. Like I posted above, the smart key maker has been used and works.

I bought my Techstream from another source and tried to put it on a 64 bit computer and failed miserably. There was a bunch of stuff about delete this file, replace it with that file, blah, blah, blah.

At that time, Techstream was available from obdinnovations for free download. I downloaded their version, followed their step by step instructions and it worked. Now you have to pay for their software, but I can definitely say, that they have their act together.

 

Do you still need to get the techstream subscription? I see they have their software, not too bad $15-$20. Going to email them but curious if you need to still buy the subscription and if it has the TRD flash on it.

 

I have 2 keys…both black (no valet)from previous owner.
Both will start my 2007, both will turn the passenger lock clockwise and counterclockwise, both will turn the drivers side lock clockwise.
Neither will lock the drivers side via counterclockwise.

I can unlock the drivers side by turning it clockwise.


Had an OEM key cut today and it behaves the exact same way as my original keys.


I had already lubed the locks with graphite prior to having the new key cut.
