Recently drove back from vacation in Canada. Spent two hours (!) waiting at the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron, MI. So basically lots of stop and little go for two hours. It was close to noon so pretty warm and sunny. Engine temp started climbing shortly after the first hour or so from 185* (where it sits 99.9% of the time). Right before pulling up to the US CBP booth, Engine temp (Ultragauge) read 219* and trans 217*. I have an aftermarket trans cooler but obviously it's less effective when no air is moving. Thankfully the actual CBP part was quick and I was moving and back down to 185*-ish (engine) and 165*-ish (trans) quickly.

Are those temps any concern? I recently had my frame replaced and therefore the coolant was replaced. I checked it during a stop and it was full. I tried limiting A/C use during the wait but, well, kiddos in back were suffering. If I ran heat full blast it would slightly lower the engine/trans temps.

Nah, your engine and tran are fine. I've hit 230 on the trans going up the mountains on a hot day. My engine normal temp is 200 and needle is always in the middle - never seen it past the middle, including numerous trips to the dez in the summer. If you google normal coolant temp, you will see it's 195-220. For ATF, 240+ is considered overheating. 2nd gen V6 Tacomas have an idiot light for overheating ATF.

Perfect, thanks. I suppose it's normal when sitting still (or mostly still) in D for long periods of time in the heat that these numbers would eventually climb. Thanks for the reply.

Make sure your fan clutch is functioning properly.
