I know this is an old thread, but can anyone post a picture looking from the top down of the cooler installed? I want to be sure it will have enough clearance behind my winch. The winch has an integrated solenoid, so it comes up taller than the top of a stock bumper.

Edit: Nevermind. I must have missed that exact photo in the OP. D'oh!

I ordered the cooler today. Hopefully it actually gets here when it says it will so I can get it installed before my trip next weekend

I actually installed this cooler and used a filter. I mounted my a little different.

I had to cut off the stock grill mount where it connects to that middle brace. Used the included foam pad and zip tied it to that middle brace. Works great in that space.

The filter I put it on the returned lined. I bought two new Hayden 106 hose which are 3/8 opening, replacing all of the old ATF hoses.

Once the grill was back on I fine tuned the position of the cooler so nothing was in contact with it.

I recently installed a Long Tru-cool 4454 cooler and completely bypassed the OEM cooler in the radiator. According to my scangauge, the ATF temp is way cooler than ever before, but I fear it's now running too cool and we're not in freezing weather yet. Being summer right now, the highest ATF temp in the mornings is 140 degrees. Then in the afternoon it tops out at 160 on the highway. It gets hotter in stop and go traffic, obviously, but only got as high as 180.
I've searched multiple threads on tranny coolers and I get mixed answers.

So if I hook it up inline with the OEM one in the radiator, will it act as a heat exchanger and sort of regulate the ATF temp so it doesn't get too cool or will it just make it worse?

I would highly suggest rotating your cooler 90 degrees. The way you have it here, it makes it virtually impossible for trapped air bubbles to get out.

I would put it inline with the radiator. How long have you drove the truck with just the ATF cooler? Have you done stop and go traffic, freeway, up hill, different times of the day etc to see what your average temps are? 180 doesn’t sound bad to me.

Just installed it last weekend, so just a few days. I do mixed driving. Mostly highway so it stays around 150-160 right now. Course it's still summer in the 80s-90s outside.

Agreed, I would run in inline with the stock heat exchanger if you get cold winters. I live in SoCal where it doesn't get very cold in the winter & I still ran mine inline. I ran mine after the stock heat exchanger.

It's not good to have ATF too cold. Part of what the stock heat exchanger does is get the ATF up to operating temp quicker in very cold climates. If it gets very cold where you live your ATF may take forever to get up to temp and might never if you only drive short distances.

If the truck lives in very cold temps, even running it after the stock heat exchanger could make it run too. In this case you would run in before the stock heat exchanger. But I don't see that happening unless they're running a big oil cooler with a fan & no thermostat or something.

If you’re worried about it running too cold, why not just put a piece of cardboard over it for the winter time to block the airflow?

I see. I'll have to reroute the hoses this weekend then. It does take a while for it to get up to temperature in the mornings, but only reaches between 125-135. Being in the 90s in the afternoon it's not too bad, but it can get below zero here sometimes during the winter.

I’ll look into it the next time I work on my front end again. From what I can remember it didn’t work for my setup but maybe I missed something. I will note that my temps have been 20-30 degrees lower on average.

I would expect your temps to generally be cooler, even if you had air bubbles trapped there, as long as you don’t get a bubble big enough to impede oil flow.

You could very well be just fine, it’s just that the orientation you have will tend to trap air bubbles. With one of the vents, preferably the outflow, on top, it would push the bubbles out.

It won’t make your truck explode, but it’s not really good, either.

What about if I turn it 180 degrees, would that help? In case I’m not able to have it setup vertical.
