I have a 2004 Tacoma with around 180k miles. For the past year I have had an issue with my HVAC fan speed control. The dial will work all levels except high. When switched to high, the fan stops. I have come accross a lot of threads about 2nd gen. (2005 and up) having a similar problem. Has anyone run across this issue on the 04 and older models?

Replaced chrome badges with Sockmonkey black badges, painted billet grill black, K&N cold air intake, my corner light turn signal circuit, Speedfreek traction bars, RAAMaudio BXT/Ensolite, Stereo: Kenwood KIV-701 USB/Bluetooth deck, 10" Pioneer shallow sub behind the rear seat, Infinity 6822cf 6x8 front and rear doors, Fosgate P400-2 (sub), US Acoustics USX-4065 (four main speakers)
Not sure if the 1st gen Tacomas have blower resistors (a resistor for each fan speed), but my 91' Toyota PU did and replacing the resistor module took care of missing fan speeds. Hopefully someone else knows if the resistors are used on 95' - 2004.

I agree the resister should be the first thing I should check. Hopefully someone out there could help locating it. Ill probably start digging around under the passenger dash this weekend.

2nd gens have the opposite problem where the fan only works on high. My resistor wasn’t the problem but the connector was burned.

Sounds like the blower resistor. Common failure for blower motors.

I would bet the switch contacts are worn enough they no longer make contact.

    THE high position being direct

I have yet to see a used blower motor resistor arrive intact from the thermal cycling they get so brittle

That is the cause of most failures they just break after time

How big of a job is it to replace the switch? I think my switch is bad - I get all speeds except my favorite: Medium-High. I've already changed the blower motor resistor.

One of those things not technically hard just a bunch of stuff needs to be removed .

The plastic cable connectors can be quite brittle with age .

It is much easier for me with the radio removed .

I am a bigger person so for me to do any major work the seat is coming out .

The switch itself slides out the back just a matter of unplugging and installing the new one

I am going from Memory and it has been some time others might have done it more recent
