I have this 14ft trailer that I bought when I had an F150. Pulled with my 2 horses several times with no issues. Obviously the Tacoma don't have the 'ass' the full size trucks have. Thinking of downsizing to a 10 or 12' stock trailer to save the weight. Would still be plenty room for my 2 horses. Wondering if anyone uses their 3rd gen to pull their horse or cattle trailers...upload_2019-8-9_17-59-59.jpg

    Yes.
3500 pound trailer, has tack room, and one horse comes to about 4800 with gear.
Flat terrain, no issues at all.
Monitored tranny temp once at 45mph constant, 95 degree ambient, normal temp as with no load, 0 change.
I have air bags, and Fox suspension which helps a lot.
Trailer electric brakes, once again, 0 issues.
Zero issues whatsoever. Remember, I am flat terrain so I can't comment on hills etc.
Don't believe all the naysayers saying this truck can't tow.

I'm assuming you mean don't believe all the naysayers SAYING this truck can't tow...? And my truck is stock suspension. Pretty flat So Illinois ground as well. I need to weigh my trailer. That would give me a better idea. I think the tow rating is 6400 pounds or close to.

I pulled a 20’ Boston whaler with my 08 with a 4 banger. No probs at ramp either.
I love that truck. But 18 has spoken to me so black is just sitting for a spell.

Well you don’t want to tow close to the tow capacity...

I have pulled a 2800 lb dry weight camper without any problems. I guess it’s about 3500 lbs loaded. I wouldn’t say it’s fun with a manual transmission on hilly roads, but no problems.

Personally I wouldn’t want to pull anything bigger with this truck frequently on hilly terrain, but others can chime in with their experience.

My cousin used to haul quarterhorses and other thoroughbreds to deliver to buyers all over the country. Once he delivered a horse to New York City (Manhattan). That was an interesting drive he said...

Pulled this from Memphis to Elkins, WV. in May. Pretty good grades on I79 between Charleston WV and Weston. Pulled it at 70 mph with no issues and passing the 18 wheelers on the way up. The Model A Ford weighs about 2300 lbs. and trailer 1000 lbs. S4 and ECT was downshifting into S3 and jumping up to 4600 rpm topping the hills. I just got used to it. Tranny stayed at the same temperature as the radiator, 195 degrees. Gas mileage sucked at about 10 to 11. Coming home was down hill. Averaging 14 plus. 9BEB1511-2534-4190-9DA2-9A50E0FCC504.jpg

How big is your trailer? And what did ya haul specifically. I'm guessing my trailer weighs 2000-2500 pounds. My gelding about 1100 and my mare about 1000. So pushing 5000 pounds total with a few bales of hay. It did fine on a 15 mile test loop today pulling it empty. I purposely got next to some semis on the interstate and there was zero sway at about 75mph.

And I don't have a brake controller installed yet. I was however leaving myself plenty of cushion and will NOT pull with my horses till I get one installed.

One similar to yours and one smaller. Little bit of everything. Obviously the lighter and slower you go the easier it is.

I’ve towed a 3500 lbs trailer all over the country with my truck.

I regularly tow a 7x14 aluminum cargo trailer. It’s 1800 lbs empty plus cargo.

It occurs to me this might be a great situation for a HiLux or diesel Tacoma. I've posted before that I don't think they'd fly here mainly because of anemic acceleration, but if hauling is your main priority, a turbodiesel would be just the thing. They can be imported for a price. And then there's the diesel Colorado--don't know much about how they tow though. That's about it for a midsize truck.

Re' sway, with a sway bar installed, I experienced zero sway pulling my camper, which happens to be 18 feet long, across the windy plains of western Iowa.

Surely be OK if I get a 10-12ft trailer with just having two horses. If not, then I'd consider the Tacoma completely worthless as a truck....

Not to high jack the thread but what trailers are you all pulling specifically. We've been renting a 14ft delta 500 stock trailer from co-op and pulling it with my in-laws tundra but looking to buy one soon. probably used but we'd love to have some stats so I know the range of what I can deal with. The delta will work fine but we're counting lbs in that one and we're in the smokies. We are looking to pull two under 1k lb horses and some tack maybe a bail or two.

I will pull static loads up to 5000 with the Tacoma but the mpgs suck. I know not everyone can afford two trucks but I have my grandpas old 2500 I restored. It’s also not gonna suck on mpg like Pamela Anderson on Tommy Lee when I use the 2500. I don’t care what people say but you can feel it behind a Tacoma. I’ve lost control of a live stock trailer in a Tacoma due to a driver flying out of a driveway without looking and fortunately recovered (had trailer brakes). I’ll never do that again

I agree, we will eventually get a farm truck for more safety and stability but for now we can use my in-laws tundra or my dad's 2500 for longer trips but we'd like to get something we can pull with the tacoma for emergencies, vet visits, and even local trail rides. Family is a ways out and use their trucks regularly, i also don't like borrowing people's trucks. My wife is the crazy horse girl and there are some nice offroad trails and forest roads near by. She and her friends can take horses and maybe I go offroad too. :D I just want to invest in something I can feel safe pulling and I know others have pulled with a Tacoma. also the delta was pulled by my uncle tundra with the 4.3 v6, just fine, with one horse and all his tack but that's the only stock/ horse trailer I have any experience with on a mid size truck.

For short trips in decent weather you’ll be fine. But you’ll not use any trailer back there almost unless it’s a utility trailer. I’ve used my Tacoma in an emergency to go get three 1200lb bales of hay on a 2000lb trailer. The truck can and will send it so to say but it has its limits like anything safety wise.

Before my wife got an F150 we pulled her horse (dutch warmblood) in a slant load, 2 horse trailer. It was not enjoyable. Sure you can do it, but pulling live weight is very different than static weight. Breaking is very diminished and forget acceleration. Not to mention visability, the tacoma is just too small to see around a horse trailer with good visibility.

I'd really advise using a full size truck for pulling horses, for your safety and theirs.

    Edit: added some photos.
