I was walking through a parking lot the other day and spotted an early 2000s Ford Focus that had insanely rusty and dirty front wheels. I decided to take a closer look and discovered something horribly wrong with the front brakes.

Notice that the rotors are thin and solid, instead of vented? Either somebody made a big mistake and installed rear rotors on the front, or something even more bizarre is going on here. I wonder how effective these would be in a panic stop? Bonus points for the pad not making full contact with the surface of the rotor.

I hope this person is never behind me in stop-and-go traffic.

Seen a lot of European designed econoboxes that have solid rotors used on the front. Even the Delorean had solid rotors on the front and that is a "sports car".

That's O.K., since it looks like the entire front wheel is not long for this world... based on the condition of the spindle hub...

Not that uncommon on econobox's of the past.

Rust grabs better in heavy braking situations. :D Disk type is normal but wear pattern is far from it.

Ive seen rotors cut off at the hub from being run metal on metal so long.

I was behind a late '90s Crown Vic a while back being driven by a young 20-something girl... when she turned into a parking lot, I noticed her front wheel was 'flopping' around on the lug studs...

I turned in behind her to tell her she was about to lose a wheel. Upon inspecting her car, I realized that someone had installed the short acorn style lugnuts, and they had bottomed out on the end of the studs 3/8 inch before they contacted the wheel...

She became pretty persnickety with me, but said she would call her husband to come and check it out before she drove home...
