I have a 2016 Tacoma Sport that I purchased a little more than a month ago. It has 45k miles on it. Just recently, I noticed that the vehicle would not make a beep when I would press the lock button on the remote or when I touch the driver's door handle. After noticing this, I sat in the driver's seat with the door closed and pressed the door lock button on the door. All doors lock except the driver's door. I then proceeded to manually lock the door with the key and it locks. I removed the door panel and checked all the wire connections and linkage and everything seems good. Any idea? Bad actuator? Already?

Sounds like a bad actuator to me.

Previous owner mostly likely disabled beep, done in settings in radio.

This is exactly what happened. @tjboards check the settings in your radio.

It used to work though. I never changed any settings and it just stopped working. Even if...disabling the beep will prevent the drivers door from locking? All doors lock upon pressing the key fab lock and the driver's door lock button EXCEPT the driver's door.

Then it sounds like bad/loose connection in door, or actuator did go.

Well sounds like the next logical step would be to take it somewhere that can diagnose the problem for you.

Bad door lock actuator like others have said....mine did the same thing at 8,000 miles ( 1yr old). Seems to be a common problem with both 2nd and 3rd gen.

Its and electrical component, I have seen them bad in cars with less than a 1000 miles on them, and the same model with 300k on them that have never been replaced. It happens.

Just double checked the settings and nothing has been changed. I have an appointment with the stealership tomorrow. I'm really hoping the actuator isn't bad already.

Looks like the actuator is around $360.00 and labor shows 1.3 hrs in All data and through our Toyota dealers internal labor calculator.

Do you have push to start? My push to start automatically unlocks my driver door when I'm about 2 feet away and it wont lock the drivers door if the fob is inside itll lock for a second then unlocks.

Did you buy it from a dealer? If so I'd go back pissed off that a month later shit doesn't work.

Yes I have push to start. I can either lock the door by touching the driver's door handle or by using the key fab. The door automatically unlocks when I pull on the driver's door handle. Well it used to work that way anyway.

Yes I purchased it from a dealer. I also purchased and extended warranty for 5 years or 100k. The extended warranty is $100 co-pay or free at the dealer I purchased it from. However, the dealer I bought it from is a strictly used car dealer(not a toyota dealer). I'm not sure I trust them to repair anything even though they have a newer Ferrari in their showroom. I was told that my truck had gone through a thorough inspection before I purchased it but I changed the oil and air filters as soon as I got it and it clearly had never been done by them. Air filter was filthy, cabin filter looked like it had never been replaced and oil was black. It'll be interesting to see how this warranty works.

Hopefully your warranty covers it OP. Mine was covered ....it was $485 for parts and labor....they replaced the whole door lock actuator assembly. There are videos on You Tube that show you how to do it yourself..... showing how to replace the small motor instead of the whole assembly....supposedly you can buy the small motor for cheap.

If you are a DIY'er.....Good luck OP...hopefully the dealership will take care of you! The link above the video is for the small actuator motor.

Thanks for the links. I am a DIY’er. I just didn’t want to have to spend my time repairing this right now. My appointment tomorrow is with a Toyota dealer. We’ll see what they say. Hopefully they cover it. If not, I’ll resort to fixing it myself probably.

Actuator was indeed bad. The part will be in tomorrow and Toyota dealer will replace it. With the Careguard extended warranty, it will be $100 out of my pocket.

Can anyone confirm if the Gen3 lock actuator is similar enough to the Gen2 where the above video is useful? Same replacement motor?
