Page 1. I can add the note that you may need to cut the shield. I did not cut the 4runner shields with the gussets. Its close but no cutting needed. Probably depends on how they welded the gussets.

 

That’s likely.

Even reusing my stock shields for my stock brakes, I had to bend the shields.

 

yah I just took a screwdriver or ratchet and pushed a couple parts away but did not cut. Its close, I will add a note for gussets as I did not have it when I first installed.

 

Added a note about spindle gussets and the wilwood upgrade. Any other key points message me and we can add it to the first post.

 

It might be worth including OEM part numbers for rotors and pads in the first post for people who want to go the OEM route. And I’d have to scroll back or look at my notes but I know somewhere in here are different aftermarket (rebuilt) caliper part numbers. I used the NAPA rebuilt calipers and brake hardware with OEM stuff for everything else. Here’s my parts list:

And my only warnings about the upgrade would be about TRD Performance pads and bleeding. Don’t use the TRD pads unless you want to clean your wheels weekly (they dust like crazy) and deal with deposits left on the rotor from time to time that will cause a vibration. Ask me how I know...

As for bleeding, I highly recommend installing speed bleeders in the front and rear and doing it old school style (pump, pump, pump, open bleeder, close bleeder, repeat until bubbles are gone). I fought with air in my lines for a few weeks until I installed speed bleeders and finally got it all sorted out.

Only thing else I might add would be about rear brakes, especially on older vehicles. Make sure your shoes/hardware are in good shape and the drums are adjusted properly before you do this upgrade. If you don’t you’ll likely have a soft or low pedal feel and will be disappointed with the upgrade until you address the rear brakes.

Going to do this upgrade soon, do I need wheel spacers to fit my OEM 17in rims for my 05 Tacoma/TRD Sport?

 

I recall someone said it does not fit the OEM sport 17's. at least the Tacoma version. Assuming it would fit T4R sport so you may need spacers. I think is super close.

 

@truckinducks quoted member was going to do it with sport wheels and spacers. he may have some info. If you get some info ill add it to the 1st post. Most folks have been using aftermarket.

 

Yep, I can confirm this upgrade fits behind OEM TRD Sport wheels using 1” or larger spacers. Been running it for about five months now without issue.

Anyone looking for the next upgrade using the OEM sized TR4 rotors. Swapped out my calipers with the Wilwoods I posted earlier. A pair of TR4 calipers with good pads up for grabs. Recently replaced the seals on one and have a set of seals for the other (just need to find them). This is a kit rr-racing makes for TR4/GX models which as you know swaps over to the Tacoma. Myself and another FJ owner had a few issues mainly due to the adapter that comes with it. RR-Racing made the adapter but we purchased the Aero-DS model which adds an external dust shield for better off road dust protection. Wilwood stated the specs were the same for the DS and non DS model. RR was great and sent a new adapter after ordering and testing on some hubs with the DS model. Found out that the specs were wrong and fixed it up. That took a couple weeks but aside from that it was a breeze.

select -DS if you want the external dust model. not required but recommended if your off pavement a lot.

A few pictures of the differences. Currently have the same rotors on that I posted in the 1st post. I have some new DBA on order but currently running the same rotors as the initial TR4 swap. 338mm vs Stoptechs 342mm or Wilwoods actual BBK kit which is around 340mm as well. Also retained the backing plate which they tell you to remove. Just needs a few cuts on the backing plate to clear the rotor. I ended up making a few relief cuts in the backing plate near the gussets spindles as well.

Since 2 piece is a bit extreme for the tacoma this is a nice middle ground. If we run into any rotor issues on the trail a quick trip to Autozone or Toyota will pull some OEM to get us back home.

 

Did this upgrade recently for my 2005 Tacoma and I'm loving the results!! I paired it with a set of Goodridge stainless lines and couldn't be happier right now. Much more braking power and more consistent modulation. I wish I did this a long time ago...

Pretty much. I would suggest the new lines as well but not required. I have one other person interested in the calipers. if that falls through you would be next.
