For California, it's 30" from the middle of the frame for our trucks (measured between the wheels) to the ground (GVWR for the double cab & access cab is 5450). That's still pretty tall. For our truck that would mean the frame sits at the height of the top of the stock wheels. There's a tall Ford truck near me who's frame is still below 30". The hood on that truck is almost as high as I am tall (6'). There's a height limit for the headlights too (54").

    From http://www.leginfo.ca.gov vehicle code:
24008.5. (a) No person shall operate any motor vehicle with a frame
height or body floor height greater than specified in subdivisions
    (b) and (c).
    (b) The maximum frame height is as follows:

    Vehicle Type Frame Height
    (1) Passenger vehicles, except
    housecars ...................... 23 inches
    (2) All other motor vehicles,
    including housecars, as follows:
Up to 4,500 pounds GVWR ........ 27 inches
    4,501 to 7,500 pounds GVWR ..... 30 inches
    7,501 to 10,000 pounds GVWR .... 31 inches

    (c) The lowest portion of the body floor shall not be more than
five inches above the top of the frame.
    (d) The following definitions govern the construction of this
    section:
    (1) "Frame" means the main longitudinal structural members of the
chassis of the vehicle or, for vehicles with unitized body
construction, the lowest main longitudinal structural members of the
    body of the vehicle.
    (2) "Frame height" means the vertical distance between the ground
and the lowest point on the frame, measured when the vehicle is
unladen on a level surface at the lowest point on the frame midway
between the front axle and the second axle on the vehicle.
    (3) "GVWR" means the manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating,
as defined in Section 390, whether or not the vehicle is modified by
use of parts not originally installed by the manufacturer.

I am stuck in this predicament as well... I currently am running my 5100's on the highest setting on my stock coils. I purchased the 884 coils and am debating if i will need to use the top plate spacer to reach the full 3" of lift. I am hoping that I will notice a difference in ride/comfort/etc with the 884's and 5100's vs. my current setup.

I wish I new about ebay's deal on the front and rear 5100's before I got my fronts. I still need the rears and want to find a good deal on them.

Check ebay for the rears as well. I think I've seen the same retailer sell those separately. You might try sending him an eBay message. He's located in Chula Vista, CA (San Diego).

My understanding is that it's bad to use spacers with the 5100s.

yea i think it is bad to use spacers on top of just the 5100's at top setting. But if you are using the 5100s at the lowest setting with OME springs I think its ok to use the small spacer to get full 3". I may be wrong but thats what I remember hearing.
