Hey guys I have a 1999 tacoma trd that I am about to do a timing belt and water pump replacement on.

So today I went into my local dealership to pick up some coolant because I am going to drop my radiator to get better access to the timing belt, and I need to replace my coolant anyway.

I asked the guy working there if the concentrated coolant was a better buy than the pre diluted stuff. He told me not to buy the concentrate because it is bad for older engines (something about a jelly...) so payed for the coolant and when I got home I realized he sold me concentrated coolant!

1st of all, have you ever heard not to use concentrated coolant in an older engine?

And 2nd, this got me thinking maybe there is 2 different types of concentrated coolant?

I am going to call the parts dept right now and ask, but if you guys have info on this that would be helpful. I am going to add pictures of the coolant they sold me. 20190808_160230.jpg 20190808_160308.jpg

Not long ago there was no such thing as concentrated coolant. It was just called “coolant”. You had to mix it with water yourself.

The person at the dealership you went to is confusing "Toyota Red" with GM Dexcool. Your '99 model calls for the "Red" version - Toyota Long Life Coolant - concentrated.

Toyota Super Long Life Coolant - otherwise known as "Pink" is premixed with water and came into being around 2004.

2003 and prior to that use "Red".

Many dealership parts dept. employees are clueless and this is not limited to Toyota.

Dilute the concentrated coolant with distilled water.
