I've posted on a few other things so far like Wheels, UCAs, and the Lift that i ended up going with, and now i am on to tires. I am torn, been reading thread after thread on comparisons and still cannot decide.

I just ordered my lift, King 2.5 extended travel fronts with SPC UCAs (considering trading out for that delta joint at some point) with #700 lb springs. In the Rear King 2.5 standard with adjusters and a heavy dakar pack, I decided to plan ahead knowing this was going to be a bit stiff, but bumpers, armor, and a tent coming very soon. I want to do this once.

The last piece of the equation is tires. I had pretty much sold myself on 265s to limit the speedo, mpg, and chopping compromises. But will i just end up wishing i had gone 285, dealt with the compromises until i could regear? Those that have had both please chime in? I am just nervous ill hate the truck with 285s until i can regear, which lets face it might be some time. I think id rather put the money into equipment and supplies to go have fun that an extra couple grand on gears. Will i still get the performance to get out there and thump hard on the truck in the north east (moving there this year) with 265s?

    Long winded, forgive me haha.

I haven't been in this truck very long. So I can't speak from first hand experience with the truck itself. But I did have a Jeep JK for 10 years. So:

Your not really talking much difference in 265 vs 285 (trail performance). I do agree that you will probably want to re-gear above 265. I would suggest that you wait on the 285's. Then, when you get ready, start looking at gears and tires. Maybe look at some true 33's or even 35's?

I think that this is the direction that i will go. Run a little less preload on the coils, maybe aim for 2in, run some 265/70/17, finish up the build with armor and bumpers and just enjoy the truck until i can price bigger tires and gears together knowing that i have more room in the suspension to work with. Thoughts?

I have had to do no cutting and have no rubbing with my 265 tires. At full articulation over mall curbs and Walmart center islands no rub. I've heard 255/85/16 offers no rub with no cutting and with larger diameter it will roll over stuff such as soda cans easier than the 265 tires. Ill probably go with those next time I get tires for my truck.

285/75/16 vs 265/75/16 don’t offer much of a perfomance advantage, Half an inch ground clearance and 3/4” inch wider tire. Performance wise they are very close. Now if you’re talking 315/75 it’s a different story.

Edit: obviously same argument for 17 inch rim

Probably comes down to how much cutting he wants to do.

Yup. It ultimately depends on the driver and their requirements. For looks the 33s are great.

The cutting (Timbo Customs on deck to CMC) doesn't bother me so much as losing power and the desire to re gear as i add weight you know. Right now in Flat AF FL it wont matter how big i go haha. But moving to New Hampshire in Nov. ill be actually using the truck on trails. For my purposes i was only considering the 285 route for the larger size.

With 265's, my JK would down-shift running against a stiff head-wind. "Annoying"!

I went from a 265/75/16 MT to a 285/75/16 AT and liked the look a lot better. I have the OVTUNE, which is still the best money spent on the truck, and installed the Hypertech Speedometer Calibrator and I'm happy where I'm at with everything.

Don't know if the JK axles will fit the JL. But their should be plenty to be found in the wrecking yards by now. And the Rubi cam standard with 4:10's. Free gear up-grade. !!!

I also considered going this route, really muddies the waters when trying to make my mind up. The look is better for sure, but still extra $$ on the bigger tire, tune, and calibrator. All less than the M4 modding world that i came from but trying to be more purposeful with my purchases this go round. HMMM, decisions.
