So I decided to tackle my leaking rack and pinion on my 2010. The new rack is in. I centered the wheels and had the steering wheel in the middle when I hooked the steering. Now when driving the wheel is slightly off center but im hoping when the toe in is done while getting it aligned, that will solve that problem.
Now for the problem, I didn't tie the steering wheel and of course it moved. I turned it all the way one way until I felt slight resistance and then all the way the other way until felt resistance and finally counting turns set it in the middle and tied it.
Of course I broke the clock spring and the horn and air bag light is on.
Im seeing for example what I think is a OEM unit for around $370.
I watched a few videos on replacing it. Seeing that I don't want to screw this up again, is there any thing else need to know about replace it as far as alignment .....Thanks for any help

I replaced mine since my horn and cruise didn't work anymore. See if you can find one out of a wrecked truck (no air bag deploy).

Just count your turns on the spring. I think it is 4.5 or 5 rotations in either direction. Once you find it. I think there are also arrows that point to the center.

You will probably have to do a vsc reset (if you have it ) for when you buy/ install the new spring. I reset mine by doing the wire jumper method..just search Tacoma world for vsc manual reset.

Thanks Killa. The rack was centered when installed as best as I can determine. The steering wheel was centered . When I drove it the wheel was slightly off center, less than a quarter turn, maybe a eighth a turn. Would the tie rods take care of that? My concern is should I get the toe set before I do the clock spring. With the car going straight and the wheel slightly off as I described, when I remove the wheel should I put it back on straight?

Does your truck have VSC? The toe adjustment should fix the off center wheel. If not, you could adjust the steering wheel one notch on the splines. If you are not sure, you can get your alignment done and then put in the new clock spring. You will just have some extra lights on the dash.

Yes I have VSC. Im going to do what you wrote, taking the car tomorrow to get aligned and I ordered a new clock spring from Toyota online.
I was talking to the guy who did my body and paint on my 69 Plymouth today and he told me get the alignment and then when I get the spring, stop by his shop and he will install it. I haven't been by his wain awhile so its a good opportunity to stop and see him....Thanks
