Well, little boy I have written others and I owned it. That said I have Never exceeded any of the hauling or towing specifications. So , Toyota must own it. These are strictly for little boys on pavement in warm climates with little dogs , because it could not haul the lives in there specification pages. So you might as well crawl in that rig of yours pull up your panties and go shopping with the rest of the 4cyl poers and Mall crawlers. Clearly you have never done any real work with a truck in your life so go back to reading your Cosmo forums a d leave it to the people who use trucks to speak. FLATLANDER!

Well, I know this is a 3rd Gen thread (which I currently own), but my Tacoma 2.7L 4-banger experience comes from my ‘06 2nd Gen. It was an MT.

That ‘06 was a serious upgrade over the 2.3L Ranger I had prior. It wasn’t even close. However, even though I kept it 100% stock, that ‘06 wouldn’t climb a hill on the highway without having to downshift. That used to irritate the ever loving hell out of me. It did get great mileage, and did quite well around town. Was also totally reliable. I still regret trading that truck when I did. I would certainly be willing to buy it again.

Ironically, my ‘18 Taco has the 3.5L V6 AT, and you know what? It has to downshift going up hills on the highway. It’s still irritating, but at least I don’t have to shift it myself.

Sounds more like a transmission issue than anything else, I'm guessing automatic.

My 2.7L MT has more than enough power for passing, do it every week pretty much. Hauled plenty of 1000lb+ loads with no problem and towed at max capability with no problem.

Let’s see. Measure performance in a drag racer- speed.

Measure performance in a tractor- torque

Measure performance in a Toyota Tacoma- longevity.

2.7 is immortal/everything else is false legacy.

ETA also if you don’t agree with this, you’re a yota fucking newb. I’ll still love you tho.

News flash, my 4.0 had to downshift to pass. I had an '89 2.9L V6 5M Ranger that was in between on power and mileage and would tow a trailer gingerly but not as well as the 4.0 auto. You have to target your needs or you end up in the wrong truck. I test drove this one so I knew it wasn't a demon but got it for the 50% upgrade on mileage and have found it has enough power for the jobs I require of it. If I need to haul something it will just have to be in a smaller trailer than the 5 x 8 I used to haul green cordwood along with a full bed. More likely, I'll simply use the bed alone and surrender my mancard to use the slow lane and any turnouts needed. Given that the stock tires and brakes would probaly let me down if I needed to stop or turn suddenly it seems prudent to stay within the limits of the vehicle and go slower anyway when maxed out even if the skinny pedal were able to allow more speed.

i don't tow, speed, or have a fat gf so i'm good with the 2.7. I have the 2.7 in my 1st gen too and it's at 230k with no problems or big repairs including 2 accidents (1 roll over). my 3rd gen is at 36k and so far only oil changes.

Had 2.7 auto for 3 years.. I liked it but it was slow.. now 3.5 manual and it is a different story... this 3.5 with manual trans has power. A lot more than the 2.7 (roughly 100hp more) and you DO FEEL the difference.. but it depends on any specific case... if you are happy with what you have either 4 or 6 cyl that’s the key...

Lol, I'm a carpenter and have been one for 35 years, my experience in pickup work trucks began with a full size 4x4 V8 Ranger w/8' bed and full rack building homes from the ground up and includes numerous other models so I'm quite well aware of what I need to do whatever job I choose to take on. I chose this one to fit my current needs and it does so. If I needed more truck I certainly would have bought whatever was called for. It sounds like you made a big mistake, don't blame Toyota because you chose poorly. Being ignorant and full of unwarrented assumptions you choose to avoid admitting a mistake and blame the manufacturer instead. If this is all you came for and all you can come up with then you deserve everthing you reap. Like I said, own it, move on, and pollute some other forum. Don't waste your breath on insults that miss the mark, it just makes you look foolish. We are blessed with an huge array of truck options but it's up to you to make the best match. You missed it by a country mile.

Remember the highest point on hp is around 5000 rpm, with that said when the trany needs power it down shift to get closer to that rpm to get power. Is just how it works and not an issue.

Yes sir, I’m well aware, and understand. I just don’t like revving that high. Probably doesn’t hurt a thing in short bursts. Probably.

The 3.7L V6 in my kids 18yo Jeep, and the 3.5L V6 in my wife’s 7yo Honda both seem twice as responsive as my ‘18 TRDOR. The Honda actually gets about 15% better mileage on average (the Jeep is an utter dog for mileage). However, my truck will pull more effortlessly up hills under load than either of them. I don’t understand how that happens, but it does.

I think it’s because 4 cyl guys went in knowing it would be underpowered so aren’t concerned by it. Us v6 guys heard 278hp and are wondering where it is

    Plus this v6 is wonky!!

I think i saw some dyno charts showing the 4 banger actually had more torque at low rpm....?

I had intended to buy the 4banger myself but they no longer offered it in stick shift

Nothing wrong with 4cyl,as long as don't try towing BIG boats and trailers,4 cyl engines are bullet proof.

From how I see it newer vehicles compare to the ones you mention don't have a 6th gear to increase the mileage per gallon, that gear is very weak you get either or but not both is hp or mileage, so when cruising in 6th gear and when you get to a hill it needs to down shift

2.7 regrets? Nope! 3rd gen regrets? Ask me in 50k miles...

So far in the last 4 months I’ve owned my CPO 2017 AC 5spd:

-4 weeks at dealership to fix faulty speedometer/tachometer housing; part on back order, but Toyota couldn’t “legally” give me vehicle back to me.

-1st/2nd gear synchros feel roasted from previous owner who probably couldn’t drive manual yet Toyota claims my whole transmission is fine and that it’s “supposed” to be clunky/weird and that’s just “how it is” despite the tech on the test drive saying “that’s weird, shouldn’t be doing this..”

-leaf springs replaced under warranty after some weird sag, not a big deal and common.

-currently spending two days at the dealer waiting on rear diff o ring seal after i noticed last night the diff was leaking. Luckily according to them it hardly lost any diff fluid and they’re going to drain and refill under warranty as well along with the seal.

I LOVE this truck to death and could care less about its “power.” Im just hoping my truck lasts the test of time. Mind you - this all occurring between 25-30k miles.

I treat it well and will continue to do so. If I continue to give me problems as I near the end of my warranty, I will be selling it and getting a 2nd gen.

In your shoes, and I was having those sorts of problems, there would be no “if it continues”. It would be gone, as soon as possible. Doesn’t matter the make of the vehicle, my next would not be the same.
