Lol 70 years deep and the dude is still an idiot. Reminds me of a story of an old woman hiking the Appalachian Trail. Hikes 2000 miles and in the last 209 miles she decides to walk a half mile off trail and die. So e say she got lost. I say its impossible to get lost on the east coast and like a elephant she wondered off and died.

Either this guy is a total loner and doesn't have friends/family to even notify where he's going, or he's deserving of a Darwin Award honorable mention.

Not sure what is worse, that couple where the girl pissed herself to "stay warm", the dude who survived on taco bell hot sauce packets, or this guy...

At least the taco bell guy had a semblance of thought. Pissing yourself to keep warm is a short term move for sure. Being wet never increases your survival odds.

I'd prob piss myself involuntarily so IDK. Not the survival scenarios I was referencing anyways.

Wow! I hope she didn’t pay it, at least I wouldn’t have. There’s ways out of that shit. Especially since she didn’t call it for herself nor (assuming) signed anything beforehand

I'm not sure TBH, this was several years ago...don't remember if insurance footed it or not but I remember thinking how crazy that was.

I'm not sure if this is entirely true but people have told me that in Colorado if you have a valid fishing license at the time of needing rescue it covers SAR fees.

Yeah whole story is crazy af and makes no sense whatsoever. Has a spot device, leaves it with her husband, lays down a half mile off trail and dies. Life insurance maybe ?

Insurance? Man it'd be tough to sit there & starve to death for money.

I think some people think they need to truly go out and live by temporarily abandoning their suburbanite slobvitity. But they shouldn't, because they aren't talented at these things & they end up dying.

I bet a woman who just hiked 2000 miles is more talented than 99.9% of the people on this forum.

Maybe. Probably, more skilled then the Instagram wkend "overlanders" on here. But I can only recall two deaths of members on here and one put a bullet through the roof of his mouth.

You probably don’t hear much from the members on here after they die.

No SAR team is going to charge if it’s a legit rescue case. Some may charge or fine if it was extremely negligent but even then it’s very rare. Most teams on the west coast are run or organized by the county sheriff and are all volunteer.

They don’t want to charge because it might discourage people from calling. Like how people are discouraged from calling an ambulance because of cost.

if you buy the insurance ($20yr) it’s like a $500 deductible to have a rescue team come and get you.
