That's how I've learned so much about these trucks, is hopping into random threads and just reading. You'd be surprised what you'll pick up.

Out of curiosity can you expand on this?

Was it just while accelerating? Or did it happen while coasting? Did it vibrate the whole truck or just the steering wheel / similar to gassing?

As a newbie, what would you mean by “people who destroy their rear drive shaft while off road”?

trying to find out what not to do.. thanks!

Trying to climb a shelf/ledge you have to be careful, as your driveshaft is what will come in contact with the rock.

Pic below is a prime example. My DS was about to come in contact with the rock. The solution is to stack a few smaller rocks in front of the rear tires, so as you go forward, it lifts you up and you don't hit the DS.

Gotcha. I thought you meant driving her hard while off roading.. heavy gassing and stuff.

No, that wouldn't do it. All DS failure's I've seen have been hitting a rock. Or tapping a rock and creating a small dent/weak spot and then later on pretzel their DS because it just crumples. Like how you can stand on a soda can with your full weight, but as soon as you tap the side of the can, it comes crumpling down.

This is uncommon though and would take a sizeable dent, and a few other factors to line up for the perfect shit storm. Only seen it happen once on TW.

Update: drove on front wheel drive for 50 miles and one of my cv axles blew out. Now we're really stranded on the side of the road in kansas.

Speaking of help...if there is anyone living in kansas city that wouldn't mind me parking the tacoma in their driveway until I can get a new driveshaft in, you would be my hero.

Whelp glad things got sorted, Its going to clunk pretty bad and may not go in because there is nothing stopping the trans / tcase from spinning / moving in 2hi. Ideally you try n flip it in 4hi in park but 90% of the time it wont go like that.

If id of known you were towing id of never recommended this.... probably on 35's + 6in lift... doesnt surprise me that this happened.... Stock size with minimal lift n not towing you could drive cross country without a rear shaft.

Im curious, can you take a pic of your truck dead on the front so we can see CV angles?

Sorry for the shit show that sounds like your trip has turned into!

No problem I unhitched the tow load after putting in 4wd (front wheel drive). But yeah the cv angles couldn't take heat

That would have been making a grinding vibration and noise long before it came apart. Maybe off-road tire humm camouflaged it.

That's also why, if you off-road and do water crossings, you should grease all the joints asap after a trip to push any water out. Those needle bearing seals are only designed to keep dust out. And If the ujoints are not greaseable, the truck was only designed to drive to the mall. J/k.

    @TacoTuesday!!

Whatever you do, do not remove the front CV cup from the spindle. leave the cups in both sides and remove the CV shaft if its blown up. Reason being, on the diff side, the cup keeps diff fluid in, and on the spindle side it actually keeps the hub from falling off!!!!!
