I have a 1998 SR5 4x4 with way too many miles and I was going out for a nice ride in the woods. Going around a wash out in a corner ( very rough bumps ) pushing it pretty hard, as I straightened out the truck died. Now it starts on the first crank and dies as soon as it reaches 1000rpms. I have no idea where to start looking to fix this. Can someone please help.

Check all your vacuum lines. This is the most common problem in your case . Check for cracks and holes in the vacuum lines as well since your truck is not a spring chicken

After that check your throttle cable

Did that already. It starts but never reaches idle speed. And won't stay on.

Change your fuel filter. It’s not the usual part that people do as maintenance . But several of us on Tacoma world practice this every 50,000 miles

So my plans are to change the fuel filter and rebuild the sending unit. After that if it doesn't start I'm at as loss for what to do

Fuel filter won't be the problem. Not saying it doesn't need to be changed but it won't cause your truck to not start all of a sudden. Rent a fuel pressure kit from part store and check your fuel pressure. Once you verified your have fuel pressure, then move on to electrical. Make sure your ignitor has come unplugged. Make sure you cam & crank (crank in particular) hasn't come unplugged. Google that to find their plug locations behind the timing cover. Check your fuses, of course.
