It's pretty safe (though not 100%) that since it didn't change with a tire rotation, this isn't the issue, either.

Somehow I managed to get 3 out of 4 bad rims. After the 2nd exchange, I sold the set for cheap and told the purchaser there was one that was taking excessive weight.

How could you tell they were bad? Just by eye or did you do a road test balance?

The bad rims showed up during road force balancing. I had to go through two road force sessions to find all of the bad rims. I guess standard balancing could have caught it but didn't.

How much weight we’re the bad ones because I believe that’s my problem too, the guy roadforce balanced mine too but never bolted on my lug centric adapter, 90 bucks wasted. I have stock rims but need to probably switch from BFG tires I believe they don’t balance as well as cheaper 33’s.

Can't remember the specific weights for each wheel. Though it looked like 2x compared to a good wheel.

After I got them off and got them ready to return, I rolled them across the garage floor and could see how the outer rim was uneven.

I can’t get a set of BFG 33’s that don’t take 12oz or more and America Tire keeps getting me new ones at my expense that are all the same. My rims don’t hop when rolling but the BFG’s always spin out of round, I never had this issue with 32’s from Goodyear. Looks like I’ll be trying Hankook, Continental, or Falcons next. Five sets of tires in eight years I get half price for em on Craig’slist so I’ve gotten new sets every time they are half worn hoping for a true set. I got the new Ko2’s, three years going and they are egg shaped and keep taking more weight. I never used to balance and accept anything over 2-3 oz of lead tops. Since they balance them for warranty I think they accept tires with heavy spots brand new and that’s why we probably get a little bit of a deal over other shops America Tire/Discount probably shouldn’t get my money any longer. I’m about to do an old school balance on the fronts at high speed on the truck and see what it takes it’s been a few years, but the only way to do something right is do it yourself. I can’t afford any more roadforce.

Yeah, same problem here. Some meatheads mounted/balanced these but it shakes above 60. Judging by these pics I would suspect either they had no clue wth they were doing or their machine is messed up. Anyone ever see this many weights piled up on every wheel? Bringing it to Tire Warehouse tomorrow :annoyed:

It is really pityful when they stack up weight like that at 12 o'clock and 3 o'clock positions on a wheel. The machine is making all of the calls.

I miss the days of tire truing machines. Come out with perfectly round tires on a rim.

Yeah, my father used to have his tires cut a couple times over their lives... I miss those days...

Yes.... that’s the answer, my uncle has my grandpas tire cutter, I should have thought of that but I don’t believe I can remove to much, that could easily give me true tires, but may wind up with bald spots too, FML, my vibes aren’t gonna go away till I can find great tires. If I get tires I’ll get the TRD pro rims so tundra brake upgrades then too, shoot I just bought hood struts (the expensive ones) Tacomaworld is gonna tank me, lol.:spending:

I don’t let any weight go there, preference, always wind up with chubbed up wheels. That’s why I don’t get a great balance.

Don't overlook your lower control arm bushings. They typically shake under braking but they shouldn't be overlooked.

I’m kinda hoping this was just poor balancing. Granted, they are heavy but they are new and the wheels are like new. My kid hides in shame as we cruise at 60, anything above is miserable. I don’t remember ever needing this much weight back in my Sears tire changing days...

I grew up using on of these Hunter spin balancers. Once in a while a car would have the speedometer hooked to a front wheel. Then we could see it spin up the wheel to speeds in the 100 MPH range. If you had the touch, there was no better balancing anywhere.

This! I’m kinda surprised you new about those, I have access to those, they do work great but are kinda scary.

Maybe I missed it, but are the tires relatively new or old? I bought my runner with a set of old tires, and had terrible steering wheel shake at 60-70 mph. I had the tires balanced, the truck aligned, the tires rotated, nothing helped. Finally, just before giving up on the truck completely, I bought a set of new tires. It started riding like a Cadillac.

Keep in mind that if the tires have a bad wear pattern, no amount of balancing or alignment can fix it. The tires will be balanced, but the surface will still not be true.

Also, rule of thumb is if you feel the shake in the steering wheel, it's tires/wheels/steering; if you feel the shake in the seat, it's driveline, rear end, etc.

The last set I bought were discounted cheapies I got at Town Fair. I am nearly certain they were triangle shaped. But good tires are expensive so I gave used Coopers off a wreck a try this time. Just had them rebalanced this morning. Haven’t had it on the freeway yet but judging by the new location and fewer weights it should be better. ...

    Yeah
At 1000 a set I cannot do this to myself as I have in the past, seeing commercials for new civics running Hankook tires makes me realize to buy what’s being produced the most. I have loved the combo of stock 15” rims on 10.5/33” tires because 12” wide looks like shit to me plus it = more weight and less turning radius. The answer may be to lower my suspension and go back to 32” for greater selection and less rotating mass. I don’t believe BFG ever dialed in this set 33’s. The only way I believe I can stay 33”s is to run 17” rims because they sell more of those tires so it’s less likely I’ll have an issue.
