I've had three toyota trucks. First was a 1990 regular cab 4×4, totaled it. Second was a 1991 regular cab 4x4, v6. Sold it to my nephew and he still has it. Rust bucket though. I have a 2002, 2.7L with 318000 miles on it with total frame replaced. Runs like a top, with regular engine maintenance .

Love reading the stories from original owners! Gives me hope for longevity too.

As some of you report the miles on your odometer off the truck at your dealerships - I work in auto manufacturing. As someone said before the trucks do get driven around the the factory and that ticks a few miles on. For instance our trucks come off the end of chassis and staged for test loop/squeak and rattle etc, driven to our stock yard, driven to the freight yard and so on for delivery. Additionally some batches get campaigned out for quality assurances, road tests, engineering related tests after parts are updated or changed in the model year - and in our case we build sometimes faster than our freight can handle because our order bank is high so our manufacturer contract rents extra parking at secure lots for storage in the meantime (large super churches, large mall lots etc) so some of those can tack on another 10-15 miles.

Anyway just to clarify why there’s likely so many variations on your trucks mileage when you took delivery even if it was factory fresh off the truck - all part of the logistics!

completely random, had looked at a Ranger and Tacoma with my grandfather for a few weeks. He talked me into the reliability (kind of wanted me to get a Prius for the longer drives) and I liked the roomier jump seats/ext cab over the Ranger. The Ranger's 4.0 looked better for power/tq #s but I wasn't towing anything at the time. Kind of wish my buddy would have pushed me harder into a Dbl Cab tho :\

I never realized until a few years ago that it was actually that day, the truck was actually built in January of '04 in CA (I think around the 14th)

that is a weird & crooked looking front mud guard ... I need to figure out how to straighten it out

    '97 taco in Belleville IL.jpg

alright, I just got back today from an exhausting 1200 mile 3-day trip back to where my Tacoma's history started, about 30 miles north east of downtown St Louis. I have an uncle & aunt about halfway between in MO that I haven't seen in about 7yrs and both are getting up there in age (near 80) I was also meeting with a small group of midwest TW people from the area for a mod day, one of them took this picture above, I do not carry tech with me or would provide some more interesting pics

I had not been to the area since 2oo7 and much has changed! The open fields I remember around the construction site were now populated with various apartment dwellings, small business strips and even a Starbucks. The only place I recognized was the QuikTrip convenience store down the road that was still there. I used to get juiced up with my morning coffee there before heading into work. Before leaving Saturday I hit almost every major freeway in St Louis county (probably 100 miles worth!) that I used to just drive around on the weekends racking up the very early miles :) There were a couple of new-to-me interchanges that must've been built in the past 12yrs since I was there last.

backing it up a bit, Saturday morning, after leaving my uncles place, I found the road conditions on i70 were much better than expected, so I decided to hop into the fast lane with the rest of the high speed traffic, the rear slider open (rarely ever do I have it open), and let the horses breathe for an extended time. It still handled 90~95 mph like a champ.

during this 1200 mile journey i tried keeping an eye out for old 1st gen Tacomas, plenty of noticeable 01-04 models, only saw one 98-00 at the very end of my journey. The only one from 95.5-97 was while I was getting gas Friday before leaving my town out on 72nd street hauling a trailer and NO other one spotted during all of these miles. Granted I could not possibly check out every vehicle coming the other way across the median while also keeping an eye on the traffic so I may have missed one, but I would think I would have at least spotted one!

I’m not the first owner but my dad was, if that counts. 234,000 miles currently. Frame replaced around 190k and replacement motor tossed in around 227k due to bad head gaskets. Replaced his 95.5 he also bought new that had around 200,000 miles on it with the 03. Great trucks.

Edit: this is the only photo I have currently.

04 4x4 3.4 bought in 04 right after returning from Iraq, now with 218k. Have replaced the ball joints a couple times, just did the clutch, radiator just started leaking from a crack, and will be doing the timing belt after deer season. She has seen -55 below in Alaska and 115 in California and left me stranded just once (ball joint). Don't ever plan on getting rid of her.

I got mine shortly after 9/11, perhaps it was the images of the pickups with machine guns mounted with our men, staged or not, was the hook? Frame done 2006, still gets looks, only 200,000 now. I see these trucks at places I go and engage the owners but most are now getting a new one. Like WWII vets our numbers are shrinking!

i can agree with that, unless you mean the drivers of...
4000 miles of nothing much but 01-04 models in the middle of the USA, pre 01s are probably out there, just having a very difficult time spotting them on the highways

9/11 period my truck had approx 57k miles on it according to my gas ledger
who else keeps a running ledger from their very first fillup?

I was checking my long-kept fuel log to see where the mileage was at 18 years ago today
    approximately 57k
i don't recall going anywhere that day, just hung around the house watching the news and waiting for Air Force One and the President to fly into town and land at Offutt AFB to do some planning

    ...

also recently discovered this under my hood, not sure how unique of a number this is but the middle two digits is my current age for the next few months
