09 4x4 tacoma with 126k miles and the driver's side bearing needs replacement. I'd prefer to just hand it to my local mechanic but economics being what they should first consider doing it myself.
I do a lot mechanical work, and tackle complete brake jobs, universal replacment, alternators, starters... basically the stuff you can do yourself without a lot of specialty tools.
I'd really appreciate the input regarding tackling the wheel bearing replacement. Is it within the realm of moderate mechanical abilities, or is it a drop off at the shop job? Thanks, Dan

Buy a complete assembly and swap it out yourself. No shop press needed and it is still cheaper than paying a shop to rebuild. Several vendors sell them on the marketplace here.

    Yes its easy.
    • Remove wheel
    • remove rotor and calipers
    • remove hub cap
    • remove cotterpin and large nut
    • 4 bolts holding the hub assembly to spindle
      • takes a bit of finnesse, rotate the hub so that you can back the bolts out all the way
    • install new hub and put humpty dumpty back together again.
Also youtube is your friend.... Watch this first then determine if its something that you want to do. If you have all the right tools then it should take you an hour tops.
