Exactly. Thats the whole point of FF. Over time it creeps into all the little voids where water would normally get trapped. They say you can even apply it to a wet surface.

The big thing is getting into the boxed portions of the frame up front, cab mounts, in the frame around the fuel tank, etc etc. Thats critical, whether you use the aerosol cans or the compressor powered gun youll want a 360 wand like I linked below. Anything thats not coated will start to rust in New England.
(It wont rust through in 5 years like that other guy said, but still)

If you want to make it easier, you can certainly knock the big paint flakes off with a wire brush before applying. Oh and wear old clothes, this shit makes a mess.

wire brush/sand off the rust as much as possible. then rust reformer, let it cure fully, then paint. Since you are in new England, get it Krown coated or fluid film it. I FF my runner every fall, using 4-5 cans each time. 2 years and my underside is totally rust free, I spray it everywhere except on the exhaust ( I wrap it fully before spraying so it doesn't smoke and stink).

Trade it in fast before you lose any more money. Toyota builds low quality trucks. They lie like hell

Popped up on Google homepage. It's a sign. Been doing this for years (decades?)Fluid film is ok, summer weight bar and chain oil is cheaper and performance is identical. Winter weight seeps even better but also washes off more quickly. If you want the ultimate, one-time coating do this here - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/ultimate-oil-undercoating-guide-diy-waxoyl.968314/ I actually need to touch up my rear diff and a couple other low areas, 3 winters later, would be bare after a few weeks with fluid film here. Anything is better than nothing though.

    Fate fulfilled, I'm off!

I really appreciate all of the suggestions - this forum never ceases to amaze me, the simple fact that so many of you have dealt with this issue too. Thanks again. I've ordered some fluid film and plan on wire brushing the loose crap.

@RocTaco - the work you did looked amazing. What kind of paints did you use?

    Lots of sail boat fuel
Could also hit up the annual fluid film party up here that @surfandturf mentioned!

I would clean and degrease, then wheel off the loose surface rust, then brush on some phosphoric acid like the POR15 metal prep, rinse, then fluid film. In my experience any rattle can job even rust reformer simply won’t last very long.

@4X42HEL - my 2017 had similar spots within a few months, and you can see how it has developed since I haven't touched it. I highly recommend the A/C redirect hose, if you haven't done it yet as the excess water would have dripped all over the frame and made it worse. Not a big deal for some of the off-road guys on here but I was seeing surface rusting on the welds very early into ownership.

Fluid Film works! 4 winters of MD/Pa salted roads and no rust at all. I only apply it once a year in November, it smells a little bit for a couple of days, but no big deal.

I've hit my truck with FF every fall and it's in pretty good shape, but I have paint flaking off and rust on my hitch receiver as well. It's an eyesore, since it's easy to spot any time I'm messing around near the tailgate. Need to brush it and recoat I guess..
