Okay. So, mods...

K, well...first, for the trips we have slated, we have 4-9 other trucks along for the trip(s). Most all of these people have experience! And, if that is a bit we need, we'll have it in our receovry arsenal, thanks!!

 

On that note, I also advise watching A LOT of videos on the many ways to use a winch and the recovery gear -- especially if you plan to go out solo. Learning how/where to safely use a hi-lift before you actually need it is also important.

Various spare parts and a bag full of high grade nuts+bolts may go a long way, as well.

 

If you have some spare time on a trip, grab one of your learned buds, and go get your truck stuck on purpose, then have them walk you through the how of getting it unstuck. Winch recoveries, proper traction board use, hilift jacking/winching, etc.

 

Yeah, I'm familiar...similar to block and tackle setup! I guess I kinda thought the Recovery ropes we purchased were for extending the winch cable? Also thought about a deadman anchor

 

a tree strap or tow strap can be used to make a natural anchor point, and most will give an extra skooch of length too. You have your maxtrax as well. You can make a real deadman anchor with those or with a spare tire and hilift as well.

Don't forget a shovel and a small axe. Those will get deadfall trees out of the way, help you dig yourself out, etc, plus a million uses in camp.

 

The ropes will work somewhat but they are too thick to run through the block and be used in that way. You can still use them to extend the reach of your winch line but might have to stop and re-rig a few times depending on how it all gets setup for that situation.

^ EXACTLY this... If you can't turn a wrench to do these fairly simple mods, how do you ever expect to fix things on the trail when something breaks? And something ALWAYS breaks. Can you change a flat tire? It's basically the same concept. Or will you just depend on one of the other people on the trip with you? There's nothing worse than having to babysit someone on top of doing your own shit on a trip like that. If you want to learn, start small and work your way towards bigger and better, like anything else in life. Sounds like you're just enjoying the idea of overlanding without being very knowledgeable of the ins and outs, thus setting yourself up for failure... But good luck. Be sure to keep us posted on your adventure. This should be interesting...

 

He said OVERLAND. Half of that will be for rotopax, maxtrax, and a cutting board. The other half will be patches.

 

Oh, and keep in mind post lift and tires, your factory bottle jack is near useless based on extension height. Come up with a solution for that.

 

Maxtrax are actually worthy though. Rotopax is the greatest 4x4 scam I have seen in a good while. So little capacity for the cost! Great for the dual sport bikes though.

 

Hit me up when you go to do Alpine loop, that's my area! Would love to see what you've built up by then!

 

To be fair, the 4gal Rotopax isn't that bad, but I agree it's a little overpriced. If you can find a way to safely and securely transport the larger Wavian cans, I'd personally recommend those instead. It's probably tough to find good space to secure them on the rig, though.

 

I actually am actually looking at getting some of the maxtrax minis. Not a fan of how tall the xbulls stack.

Where would you even mount rotopax on a dual sport? Wouldnt an extended tank be a better option?

 

On top of the hard cases is a popular place on the few I have seen around here. Or otherwise mounted to them in some fashion. Front, back, on the seat tail, etc.

 

6 in line or 3 wide fit perfectly between the wheel wells.

 

Interesting. Looks like they may not fit under my tonneau, though. I'll have to do some research.

 

I doubt they would. They are about an inch maybe 1.5 over the top of the bed.

Never said I "couldn't"...I'm sure I could figure it out! That said, I would rather pay for install vs. my doing it. I get everyone here wanting to do their own mods because they enjoy doing it and potentially to save a bit of $. Me, I don't have interest in performing the more involved mods if I can avoid it. And, paying someone is just part of the process.
