As long as it’s not a front loader, turn it off and wait for the unlock. If it’s a front loader, gotta wait till it drains to open it.

I’ve been dealing the past week with the joys of buying a used vehicle and third party warranties.

Sometimes I wonder if I did the right thing trading in my mazda3 that I had from new for less than 2 years for the tacoma, sure I miss the 30+ mpg and the snappy 6 speed transmission and light clutch over the behemoth with a automatic who has more trouble slotting into a gear than a drunken college boy constantly asking “is it in?”, but I definitely have more fun with the Tacoma.

So what’s been going on: truck seems to have had a perpetual oil leak coming from somewhere so I took the truck back to the Hyundai dealership in Antioch where I bought it used and they resealed the lower oil pan. Low oil light comes back on, this time I take it over to Berkeley Toyota while the truck is still under powertrain warranty. They see the oil everywhere, redo the gasket on the lower pan and call it a day. Fast forward a month and maybe about 700 miles later, the low oil has magically reappeared again. Bring it back to Berkeley thinking they might have done something incorrectly, and this time they decide to go a little more indepth with their investigation.

They pull the skid, and their inspection reveals a crack in the upper oil pan. Since it’s out of powertrain warranty, it’ll cost 3700 dollars, parts & labor. I’m not going to pay for that. Not when the Hyundai dealership pretty much threw in a 3 year full comprehensive warranty when I traded up. So truck got dropped off last saturday, the service department lead says he’ll look at it tuesday. Get a call wednesday, the crack is a little more than what their service shop might be able to handle, but luckily they send it over to their toyota sister delership a few blocks away. They found that the upper oil pan is quite porous and it’s apparently an issue with the Tacoma engines. I guess oil worked its way through a weak spot. Luckily, they can handle it for sure, and I just got the okay that the warranty will cover everything, but they need to send an inspector out to verify the work. So now, I’ll have to wait a little bit longer, as they’ll have to pull the entire engine out now for a rebuild.

I’m sad I don’t have the truck around, but if I don’t have to pay for it and not have to refill oil so frequently from here on in, then allright.

    That’s money for future parts.:D:spending:
