I got out of my truck this morning and noticed this:

    IMG_8532.jpg

There is no other surrounding damage, and it's not scraped or punctured. It's like someone rubbed it and the paint just flaked off. Is this common or do you think this piece was painted before? I would have thought the paint would have adhered better to the plastic.

Looks like your bumper cap had a cheap non-factory paint job done on it.

Seriously there is an obvious rub mark on the bumper. I can see it from here.

    Agreed.

I too see the red scuff and wonder if someone 'assisted' that.

    Scuff or reflection?
Either way, lack of primer/adhesion promoter.

IMG_20190821_192753.jpg IMG_20190821_192806.jpg I had the same happen to an older 4X4 Nissan. I wrecked the hell out of it but it was new enough to fix so they replaced some parts and repainted them to match. Obviously they came well short of the factory paint job. Has your truck been repainted? If so, they may have given you the same half ass paint job. I wish you luck bud!

I guess it's had a fender bender in the past, before I bought it. Guess I'll be buying some primer, along with blue paint.

So maybe someone hit you slightly at some point and you didn't realize it. Fast forward and maybe you took it to one of those high pressure touch less car washes....and boom.

    Possible?

I'm going to try to not be overly technical here.
If the part is genuine Toyota, it will be what is known as "raw" plastic. This particular type will need an adhesion promoter. If you just spray a typical spray bomb (or any paint for that matter) it will eventually produce the same result of the top coat coming off the substrate.

Not trying to tell you what to do, just trying to alleviate frustration.
