I took my wife over to the place where they put some new tie-rods and aligned her truck
yesterday... while there I was talking to them and the subject of Jasper engines came
up, they like them... another place that I liked where I took my truck last year also
does Jasper engines... they warranty them, so that would help too... other options
might be a junk yard (pig-in-a-poke?) or an engine from Japan - their strict emission
laws cause them to consider engines with less than 100,000 miles to be worn out, so
    there's a market for them...

+1. I found a red herring with the 4Runner motor that will be nearly impossible to replicate in any reasonable time frame.

Dear god this is a loaded question without a lot of information to go on.

Why do you want to swap? Are you just bored and looking for a saturday afternoon project? Did you blow your current motor? What are you looking for in a new motor? What's your budget? Who's your friend that's going to do the work? DO you intend for him to be your friend after the work is done?

I think he just means changing out his old v6 for a new v6.

If not, Cummins 4bt or bust.

You are only limited by the size of your budget and the weight of your new engine .

If it is going to be street legal by the Emission laws where you live.

While a 3406 is one of my favorite truck engines just a little heavy for a Tacoma
